Why your Skin Needs a Workout.

At my skincare practice, The Skin Studio, one of the lines I carry is Rhonda Allison. Their professional products offer the purest, quality skin nutrition for daily home use and the most effective, safe, result oriented professional treatments available. Always looking to nature for inspiration, Rhonda blends the best of active natural ingredients with highly beneficial, scientifically developed compound to create a synergy of superior professional treatments and customized home care products that will transform the condition of your skin. “No Animal Testing only Human Testing.” The Rhonda Allison Company and its affiliates are environmentally aware of the planet and endeavor to GO GREEN whenever possible.
I’m so excited to announce the new 2013 Signature Facial!
Here’s all,the juicy details as explained by Rhonda Allison herself.

For 2013 we’re focusing on exfoliation and infusion – exfoliating dead layers and infusing the skin with the antioxidants – with our signature facial aptly named Antiox Ex-Fusion. This treatment begins with the Liquid Enzyme Peel, a very unique exfoliant that combines an enzyme (papain) with low-strength acids in a liquid delivery. This is a fast-acting formula that works to dissolve and exfoliate keratin, yet does not require heat to do so. Upon removal skin is stimulated, and much smoother and polished.
Exfoliation is taken a step further with the Derma Peel, which when applied goes through changes with the skin as it works. Initially it starts as a gel, becomes liquefied, then forms a bond with the keratin to create a mild granular exfoliation.
To nourish the skin, L-ascrobic acid in the C-Peptide Complex strengthens, rebuilds and protects the skin. Antioxidants from grape seed extract, resveratrol, vitamin E, and omega-6 EFAs further support the regeneration process.
Skin will glow and feel instantly firmer with the potent dose of peptides and antioxidants that work to tone the skin and provide relief from free-radical damage. The blend of exfoliating, peptide and antioxidant ingredients along with the heating (warm compress) and cooling (Ice Globe facial massage) create the perfect facial workout.
Continuing the care at home
To keep clients on track with their new skin fitness program, send them home with a good cleanser, antioxidant and nutrient-rich serums, and a good protection formula. This might include:
Pumpkin Cleanser – antioxidant nutrition boosted with L-lactic acid
C-Peptide Complex – a powerful blend of L-ascorbic and collagen-building peptides
Antioxidant Complex Serum – firming, toning, moisture-binding, and antioxidant support
Growth Factor Serum Plus – enhances regeneration, healing and hydration
Eye Revitalizer – brightens, tightens and hydrates the eyes with beneficial peptides and nourishing ingredients
eZinc Protection Cream – zinc oxide, red algae, white ginger and green tea provide antioxidant support, hydration, UV protection and healing benefits
Grape Seed Parfait Mask – this can be used once per week with the Grape Seed Hydrating Serum to infuse the skin with resveratrol and vitamin E to tone and soothe the skin.

Help for Thinning Hair

Like a peacock’s brilliant feathers, hair is a secondary sexual characteristic, explains London trichologist Dr. Philip Kingsley. “You don’t need it to keep you either warm or cool, so its primary function is to increase attractiveness.” We live in a culture of hair, coveting Victoria’s Secret supermodels’ voluptuous waves as much as their curves. So closely linked are sex appeal and self-esteem that a 2004 Rogaine survey of more than 500 women across the U.S. revealed that 24 percent equated losing their hair to losing a limb. Since 30 million women in America — roughly one in four — have thinning hair, there’s a serious portion of the population at risk for an emotional crisis.

There are many causes of shedding, from stress to chemotherapy, but 90 percent of hair loss is genetic and needs to be treated with medication. It can also be a sign of a thyroid disorder, say endocrinologists.

The average age for women dealing with thinning hair is 25 to 35 — that it’s just another “gift” of menopause is a myth. Also, we can’t simply blame our mothers, as previously believed — if there’s baldness anywhere in your family tree, you’re at risk. Unlike male-pattern baldness, where patches of hair fall out over time, female hair loss means a reduction in hair volume, making transplantation extremely difficult. “The total number of hairs doesn’t always decrease, but the diameter of each strand shrinks,” says Kingsley. And too-thin hairs won’t grow past a certain length — which explains the baby fuzz around my hairline.

The key to successful regrowth? First, admit you have a problem. Each day you dwell in denial, you’re losing precious time. The more hair you’ve lost, the less likely it is to all grow back. Telltale signs, like a wider part or a smaller ponytail, don’t show up until you’ve lost nearly half your hair! Seek out trichologists and dermatologists or endocrinologists who specialize in hair problems. (A good place to start.

Whiter Teeth in a Flash

If you’ve been considering whitening your teeth but haven’t done the deed yet, consider this, “Since teeth naturally yellow as we age, whitening them will automatically make you look younger”, says Kim Harms, DDS, a practicing dentist and a spokesperson for the American Dental Association. What’s more, a 2008 Columbia University Study found that women with healthier-looking teeth earn more than those with less sparkling grins. Sign me up!

So let’s look at the different options out there and what’s best for you. Whiteners work in gel, strip, or liquid form to dissolve surface stains on your teeth. The enamel of your teeth is extremely porous and absorbs pigments from food and drinks. Peroxide bubbles on those surfaces and lightens those pigments.

If you have certain kinds of dental work, i.e. veneers, caps, or crowns, remember lighteners will not penetrate those surfaces. Likewise, stains caused by antibiotics, and tetracycline are also very hard to remove, so see your dentist. They will know which methods are best for you.

Slide the thin plastic film over your teeth and let the peroxide soak in for 30 minutes once a day. Users said they are comfortable to wear, and there’s no goop to ooze out. However, they can cause sensitivity on gums, but it went away in a couple of days. Also, the flavor wasn’t the

Biggest change: GoSmile Advanced Formula $89 for 20 ampoules,, results in 2 days
Pop open the ampoule and swab on the whitening formula twice a day-no rinsing or brushing. One tester said she couldn’t even tell the whitener was on her teeth.

Fastest: Aquafresh White Trays $40 for 7 sets,, results in 1 day
Pre filled trays are slipped over your teeth for 30-45 minutes once a day. Users said the treatment is convenient, and the gel doesn’t taste bad.

If you see a pro:
The whitening agents salons and dentists use are 3times more powerful than home versions, and you’ll see results faster. For a dramatic change consider laser whitening. First, rubber guards are placed over the gums to protect from sensitivity. Then teeth are coated with a bleaching agent and a light is aimed at them to activate the gel. The entire procedure lasts about an hour and could whiten your teeth 6-8 shades in one visit and cost about $249.
Good luck ladies! Share with us what has worked for you.

Help for Hyperpigmentaion

If you’re someone who has suffered with dark spots, pigmentation and uneven skin tone for years, it’s finally time to take control and banish them for good. With today’s arsenal of lotions, potions, esthetic treatment peels, and lasers, there’s tons of treatments options for every budget and lifestyle.

First let’s talk about the types of hyperpigmentation and how it’s caused.

There are three main types of hyperpigmentation, each of which is categorized by their cause.

*Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). This occurs following skin injury from acne lesions, psoriasis, burnsIt begins to fade as the skin regenerates itself—a process that can take months or more. On the positive side, PIH generally responds well to treatment.
*Lentigines. These are commonly known as liver spots or age spots. Although they do become more prevalent with age—they are found on 90% of light-skinned individuals over the age of 601—they are not directly caused by the aging process. Rather, lentigines are related to UV exposure.
*Melasma. This is caused by hormonal fluctuations, common, for example, during pregnancy, with thyroid dysfunction, and through use of birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy. It affects an estimated five to six million women in the United States alone and can often be difficult to treat.

Although not considered a main cause, certain illnesses, as well as the use of certain prescription medications, may cause hyper-pigmentation.

*UV exposure. Questions surrounding these topics may pinpoint UV exposure as a cause of hyperpigmentation, while determining if the skin care professional should be on the lookout for signs of melanoma.

Use of tanning beds and unprotected UV exposure
Frequency of sunscreen usage
Likelihood of burning when exposed to the sun

Now let’s look at the best ways to treat these conditions.

*topicals medications/creams
Hydroquinone. 2%-4% This is frequently referred to as the gold standard for hyperpigmentation and with good reason: It has been used for more than 50 years and is the only U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved product for skin lightening. It is often formulated with antioxidants, retinoids and hydroxy acids to improve results. Unfortunately, it can be irritating to certain individuals and may cause serious reactions when used in high concentrations.

Azelaic acid. This was developed for the treatment of acne. However, it has proven to be beneficial in the treatment of hyperpigmentation, especially PIH from acne lesions. In one study, it demonstrated results similar to 4% hydroquinone, but without its side effects.

Kojic acid. This is a naturally occurring derivative of certain fungal species that features an efficacy similar to hydroquinone. In fact, hydroquinone and glycolic acid can produce better results when kojic acid is added to the formulation.

Mandelic acid. This AHA is derived from almonds and is used in the treatment of several skin conditions, including all types of hyperpigmentation. It is often combined with salicylic acid and administered as a peel, in which case it has fewer side effects than a glycolic peel and has demonstrated better efficacy.

Another great treatment option for hyperpigmentation are laser treatments. Lasers such as the Ruby and Q-switched ND:YAG reach the dark spots deep in the skin, converting light to heat, and literally blow up dark spots which then flake off the skin. Though the procedure only takes a few minutes redness and scabbing can occur; recovery time is about a week. At about $700 per treatment and you typically will need more than one.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments or photo facials can also help hyperpigmentation with no downtime and a week of what is called “peppering” may occur. At about $150-200 per treatment recommended in 3-6 treatments 3weeks apart.

Prevention is key

With all clients, especially those undergoing treatment for hyperpigmentation, preventive measures are vital. The necessity of daily sunscreen application cannot be emphasized enough. Too often, clients are the cause of recurrent hyperpigmentation due to a nonchalant attitude toward sun exposure. Listen to your skin care therapist!!

Following treatment for hyperpigmentation, a more focused approach to daily skin care should be implemented. Clients can much better maintain the positive effects of treatment through the use of professional skin care product lines that include proven active ingredients coupled with effective delivery systems. As is recommended for all individuals, a regimen involving four steps—cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and protect—should be standard.

What’s on your Nightstand?

I’ve always been proud to say I’m a pretty organized person. There’s a place for everything and everything is in its place. But I have to say, I have a dirty little secret.

My nightstand is a disaster! watch this video.

So what things do you really need at your bedside table? Think of the things that you mill around the house using before you go to bed. Put a small box on your nightstand and put those things in the box as you use them. At the end of the week you’ll know what you need on your bedside table or in those drawers  every night.

So I cleaned out my nightstand and this is what I have on top and in the drawer.
On the table I have a plant and the picture of my sister who is pregnant right now. It reminds me to think about her and to text her and ask how she’s feeling. Also a coaster for my water or tea, And my iPad and iPhone connection. Since I use my iPhone for my alarm and don’t need an alarm clock.

In the drawer I have my lip and foot balm, earplugs, throat lozenges, sleep number remote(I’m 45 my husband is 100), and the books for whatever I’m reading or studying at the moment, yoga toe separators, golf ball, and lavender eye pillow, One pen and one pencil As I have realized I only use one at a time and I don’t need five or six.

Hopefully it will stay this way!

Here are a few more pics of some really cute nightstand ideas.

Have fun, personalize it and make it your own. Send us your nightstand pics!

The latest beauty craze to sweep the US is butt facials. Yep, you heard me right. Butt facials are the latest way spas are looking to earn money. Spa owners are claiming that a butt facial offers a great looking pair of buns after a relaxing facial down there. So, what does a butt facial involve and is it really worth it?
If you’ve ever had a facial facial then you’ll pretty much know what to expect. Cleansing, exfoliating, maybe some microdermabrasion or a chemical peel along with an appropriate mask and massaging in of nutrients. Some places offer a spray tan for a totally new you.
The entire facial lasts for about an hour and range in price from $65 to a whopping $650 in the Beverly Hills area. image

If you’re spa doesn’t offer a butt facial, or if you’re like most of us and the price tag makes you cringe, why not consider an at-home butt facial instead?

· To Begin, Have your partner wash your bottom with a warm washcloth.
· Next, cleanse the area with a facial cleanser that is suitable for your skin type.
· Rinse the cleanser from your skin and dry the area with a soft cloth.
· Have your partner apply an exfoliating facial cleanser that is suitable for your skin type to the area and rub vigorously to remove dead skin cells.
· Rinse the exfoliating cleanser with warm water and pat skin dry with a soft cloth.
· Apply a facial mask meant for your skin type and leave on for the allotted time provided by the manufacturer’s instructions.
· Have your partner rinse the mask thoroughly from your bottom and pat skin dry.
· Your partner can then apply a moisturizer to your bottom or for a real treat, have him or her apply massage oil and give you a relaxing massage to finish the butt facial.

Now, exchange places with your partner and repeat the above steps.

In the Dallas area check out Spa D’Luna for butt facials starting at $120.

Happy Sunday and Veteran’s Day friends, family, and fans!

I am getting a late start to my blog this week, but nevertheless, I am doing it. I wanted to blog about our appearance at Champion Fitness Gym.

I have been a fitness trainer for about 10 years and I usually train at small independent gyms. In my 10 years, I have worked at 4 gyms. Trust me, that is not bad. (The turn around for a gyms trainers are pretty fast.) I have loved each and every gym I have worked at. I have so many great memories!

Anywho, I have been at Champion Fitness since July this year. Our beauty expert Shelly Mac told me about this new gym that opened at the Shops of Legacy (the HOT SPOT of my city) with  brand new state of the art equipment s0 I decided to check it out. When I went to check it out June 2012, I learned that it had opened in Sept 2011. I soon as I saw it, I instantly fell in love with the equipment. As a trainer, it is always fun to have new equipment to train on. (Even though you can workout without equipment, it is always fun to have variety.)

I specialize in training pageant contestants, fitness bikini competitors, models, and future Healthy Housewives. I needed a classroom to practice posing and walking. My old gym did not have a classroom, this one did. I was sold! So, I moved gyms that very next week.

Being at Champion Fitness, I got to reconnect with Danielle Hinson (our new family expert here at HH) and we have become really good friends. Danielle Hinson teaches group exercise fitness classes at Champion. You guys really need to take her class. She teaches Tabata and Insane drills. Both are pretty tough. If you live in the Frisco, Plano, or North Dallas area, here is the schedule. She will have you coming back for more!

Danielle Hinson and I

A couple times a year Champion Fitness throws a member appreciation party. They have wine, fruit, and cheese and even hire a DJ. They even had a raffle and gave away a free ipad. This event they asked the Healthy Housewives to make an appearance and chat with the members since 4 of the HH girls workout there. It was such a fun event. There are members I see everyday that I say hi to, but it was nice to get to know them on a personal level. After the event at Champion, we all moved to Blue Martini (down the street from Champion) to celebrate some more. It was so much fun, we are definitely looking to do it again!

Members chatting it up

If you live in the area and would love a great gym with fun motivating people, come check out Champion Fitness. I promise you will love it!

The Acorn Squash, simple, healthy, tasty!

Like many other vegetables, with acorn squash a chef can get as simple or fancy as he or she likes. Probably the most popular way to prepare acorn squash is simply to half it, spoon out the seeds, cut the halfs in half, put the whole on a baking sheet.

One serving or one cup of acorn squash contains 145% of the daily recommended requirements for Vitamin A. It also contains Vitamin C, potassium, manganese, folate (folic acid), and 15% of the omega three fatty acids necessary to good health. It is also a good source of fiber. With all of these vitamins and minerals acorn squash has many health benefits.
Because it contains phytonutrients, acorn squash is thought by many to have an anti-cancer effect which is especially strong when the squash is turned into a juice. It may also promote prostate health in men.

The orange-yellow color in squash comes from the Vitamin A precursor. The strong presence of beta-carotene, helps reduce the possibility of lung cancer, even in smokers. Carrots have the same benefit. The beta-carotene also reduces free radicals in the body, even while reducing the chance of heart disease and colon cancer.

Here’s a simple, tasty recipe for acorn squash. Enjoy!

–Shelly Mac

Classic Baked Acorn Squash Recipe

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 1 hour, 15 minutes

Add to shopping list

1 Acorn squash
1 Tbsp coconut oil
2 teaspoons Maple Syrup

1 Preheat oven to 400°F.

2 Using a strong chef’s knife, and perhaps a rubber mallet to help, cut the acorn squash in half, lengthwise, from stem to end. Use a spoon to scoop out the seeds and stringy stuff in the center of each half. Score the insides of each half several times with a sharp knife. Place each half in a baking pan, cut side up. Add about a 1/4 inch of water to the bottom of the baking pan so that the skins don’t burn and the squash doesn’t get dried out.

3 Coat the inside of each half with 1/2 a Tbsp of coconut oil. Dribble on a teaspoon of maple syrup to each half.

4 Bake in the oven for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, until the squash is very soft and the tops are browned. Do not undercook. When finished, remove from oven and let cool a little before serving. Spoon any liquid that has not already been absorbed by the squash over the exposed areas.

Yield: Serves 2 to 4, depending on how much squash you like to eat
Check out what I had for dinner last night.
