We could get used to this!

We could get used to this!

Did I get your attention from my blog title? I know, I had to pinch myself too. Things have been a crazy dream for the Healthy Housewives and I these days.

If you have been following us for awhile then I am sure you have witnessed all the HH changes that have been going on the past 2 years. It has been a rollercoaster ride for me for sure!!  Some of it has been a dream come true and some of it has been so hard it left me heart broken at times. I could write a book and you would never believe what REALLY happens behind the scenes. I seriously want to write a book, because I have some entertaining stories to share. So stay tuned for that one! It will be a juicey read. I don’t hold back.

But, if you have just joined our page, you will see that things appear to be rolling for us these days. But the truth is that I have had a long hard road for 2 years of blood, sweat, tears, lost friendships, and finances in this project. I eat, sleep, breathe, and dream the Healthy Housewives day and night, 24/7. I want the Healthy Housewives to be a place where women can come to for information on health, fitness, nutrition, beauty, family, pets, pregnancy, the latest products, and female issues. I wanted a group of different health and fitness professionals to help educate those who wanted to learn new things. I am NOT a woman of routine. I love trying new things and learning new information daily. The older I get, the more open minded I have become. There is no one size fits all nutrition program, there is no one size fits all workout program, and health information changes daily! We do the best that we can with the resources we have at that present moment. I am open to change and embrace it. I have always been open to new people, lifestyles, cultures, and ideas. But these days, I really embrace the unknown. It is very liberating.

People always ask me-How did you come up with this brand? Well, 2 years ago (May 2011), I had just watched “The Real Housewives of New York” rerun and Bethenny Frankel had her brand Skinnygirl on that show. I remember watching it saying “I want to do a reality show like this but with health and fitness professionals!” Housewives have been popular since I can remember-Desperate Housewives, Soap Operas, The Real Housewives, ect…and I don’t think they are going away anytime soon. I remember that day after watching the Real Housewives, I couldn’t wait to tell my workout partner. I drove to the gym excited to tell her about my dream. She was in. At first it started with 3 girls and then it went to 4 girls. As time went on the brand evolved and the main cast changed. It was a process with growing pains to get where we are now. I launched The Healthy Housewives 11/11/11.

From the get-go I wanted a reality show to share fast everyday health and fitness information. I had my mind made up that I was going to get us a reality show. And that is what I did! I have had to find the right girls who shared my vision, knock on doors, work sleepless nights, and believe this was all going to work out. From launching it from 11/11/11 to today has been one of the hardest dreams I have ever worked on in my life. I used to think competing was hard, I was proved wrong after this. I have had so many setbacks but I never stop believing even at my lowest. I picked myself up and keep believing. Here we are almost 2 years later in Hollywood meeting with production company after production company pitching my dream to bring it to life for TV.

You can say our meetings went really well! We can’t tell you anymore than that for right now. Stay tuned with us to see what happens next with your Fit Five!

Thank you for your support and feedback! We couldn’t do this without our HH family! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Girl Power in Hollywood

signI just spent the week in Hollywood to help pitch show ideas and WOW what an experience!  The only time I have ever been to LA was for a track meet but I have never actually spent any real time there.  Before I left Dallas people kept wishing me luck, but I didn’t know what to expect and didn’t go into this week with very high expectations. Well, let me clarify on that point; I did think that there was a good possibility that a new fitness concept show could come out of the meetings. However, I was skeptical that what the producers would want wasn’t something that I fully believed in and would want to be a part of. It was all a little intimidating at first. We were lucky enough to get in front of some of the biggest production companies in the industry. I don’t know much about Hollywood but I do know you don’t have multiple chances to pitch your concept.  You have one chance to make a first impression, sell yourself and your concept.  It was a lot of pressure and I admit that I let Hollywood get the best of me that first day.  I thought that if the producers initially had one vision that out of respect for the people who were responsible for me being there, that I didn’t have the authority to step up and change the direction of the meeting. So that first day, I sat back and didn’t challenge the direction because I felt like it wasn’t my place to freely speak my mind.  It was frustrating to say the least.

After that first day of meetings we went out to dinner with some of the people involved in this project. At dinner we discussed what happened that day and strategized on ways to improve our pitch. The feedback I was getting was that I was coming across too shy and needed to be more outspoken.  I agreed that I had been kind of quiet but the reason why I had remained so quiet was because I didn’t believe in the direction those first meetings were going. I was able to express why I was quiet and at that point got permission from the agents and others that is was ok to speak up, even if that meant standing up against their own vision. Woohoo! That’s all I needed to hear.

I felt like somehow we had been getting pigeon holed into only bringing value at a superficial level with nothing else to offer. That made my skin crawl and I wanted nothing more than to at least stand up for ourselves and walk away with our heads held high. Even though I think it would be cool to be on tv, I only want to be on tv if it’s positive and empowering to women. I think there is enough on tv that is degrading towards women.  As women we have much more to offer than our looks and cat fights.  What did we have to lose by standing up for what we believed in? Maybe a show but we agreed that we wouldn’t want to be on a show if it wasn’t what we actually believed in.  I couldn’t stomach sitting through one more meeting feeling degraded. So with nothing to lose and everything to gain, that night we went back to the room and strategized how we could best present ourselves and our ideals.  I felt like in some small way we were making a stand; not just for ourselves but for all women.

photoSo the next day we were fired up and ready to go represent. I was focused like I was about to run a race. We were both determined not to let anything get in the way of us standing up for our convictions and getting our points across. Turns out our three meetings the last day went great. We went out with a bang and with our heads held high.  We completely turned the direction around and I was so proud of Marzia and myself. I was hearing Beyonce women empowerment songs playing in my head all day. What a crazy experience! There was lots of interest that last day for our show and only time will tell what happens next.  But no matter what happens, I feel like we both grew from the experience. We listened to our guts, fought for our beliefs and convictions and showed that women do have way more to offer tv than cat fights and superficial qualities.  At the end of the day, we high fived and both knew that even though it was risky, we did the right thing.  We’ll keep you posted on the outcomes. The possibilities seem super exciting but we know it’s a long process ahead. I am very thankful for this amazing experience and to those who included me in this project. No matter what happens, we will keep pushing forward.

I hope you had a great week!

Healthy Housewives on the red carpet at Viva Glam Magazine event

Happy Saturday everyone!

First off, thank you for all the wonderful emails. I love reading your stories and you guys continue to inspire me everyday. Thanks for all your support!

For this blog, I wanted to recap my trip to Hollywood with the Healthy Housewives. We had such a great time!

For those of you who don’t know, I am the fitness editor for Viva Glam Magazine. Viva Glam is a Hollywood magazine that celebrates the iconic beauty of women. It bridges the gap between high fahion like Vogue and men”s magazine’s like Esquire and Maxim. It features major stars like Cheryl Burke (this month’s November covergirl).

A couple of the Healthy Housewives got to come this time around. It was Brooke and Kathy. I was so excited to find out that it was Brooke’s first time in Hollywood! She really got spoiled the first time coming to LA! She got to stay at the W on Hollywood Blvd, go to a celebrity red carpet event, and watch my Viva Glam photoshoot. We also got to go shopping at Kitson, go to Dash, and eat at the Ivy. Lot’s of fun novelty Hollywood stuff to do there!

Shopping on Melrose at Kitson’s

Getting ready for a red carpet event takes about 4-5 hours. From the shower  to blow drying hair to the make up team that get’s you ready. The Healthy Housewives had the MODEE glam squad do all of our hair/make up for this star studded red carpet event. It was so much fun seeing them work thier beauty magic on us. We did feel beautful when we all were done.

In the hotel before we went downstairs to event

The event was so much fun and we got see a ton of celebritites. I got to walk the red carpet (which is always a thrill) and got to meet a ton of new people. Working for the magazine is so much fun!

We had a great time staying at the W Hotel on Hollywood Blvd. It was so close to everything. We are looking forward to the next time we go out there. I have a few shoots out there in January, so I know for sure that is the next time we will get to go again!

I will be posting pics of our Hollywood adventure as soon as I get time to sit down and downlaod them. Thanks for reading my blog. Have a great Saturday!
