Ocean Freeze; Still a Breeze

We are at the beach house for Spring Break this year, and it’s freezing. Ok, not freezing, but around 40-55 degrees, and NOT laying-out-in-the-sun weather. Despite the Cape Cod-like days, I’ve retreated to my daily jogs on the beach. I don’t usually do the same exercise on back-to-back days (it’s healthy to shake it up and there are so many activity options!) but somehow, being close to the water helps me loosen my grip on my rules and routine. I’ll shake it up, so I am not working the exact same muscles every day—sometimes sprint drills, other days it’s a beach boot camp routine, and some times it’s a sand jog and then Yoga. It’s tough to beat a steady-paced therapeutic run along the shoreline, but most of us can’t stop what we’re doing and run to a beachside town somewhere.

Another tradition at the beach house is smoothies. Despite the cooler temps, I still made my favorites that I share below. There’s several farmer’s markets in the area, so fresh, organic produce is easy to find, and I pack my vanilla Advocare protein powder. (I also mix half a scoop of protein powder into steel cut oats with cranberries for a morning meal or snack. Yum.)

Add some cinnamon if you want. I’m a cinna-addict!

1 cup spinach

1 cup frozen mango or peaches

1 cup freshly-juiced carrot juice (or store-bought organic carrot juice)

1/2 cup almond milk or coconut water

Shot of wheat grass

1 scoop of protein powder

1 cup spinach

1/2 cup coconut water

1/2 cup kale

1 cup frozen blueberries

1/2 cup raspberry or cranberry

1 scoop protein powder (optional)

Squeeze one lemon on top and blend. Enjoy!

I’ve never felt closer to God than I do at these moments. This past trip gave me an especially relaxing session as I reflected on the Water Element. Symbolizing spirituality and wisdom, this therapeutic combination got me thinking about how the ocean is like life… or maybe it just reminds me of my life.

  • Changes, like waves, are coming whether you want them to or not.

What’s in your Water?

If you’ve been following me on social media, you probably see some glamorous stuff (I’m a corporate spokesperson),  some sweaty stuff, (I’m a runner, fitness trainer, and sweater), some health and wellness stuff (I’m passionate about holistically caring for one’s health), and then you see some tubs of murky water and funny bio-electricity tools (I’m a certified LectroChi practitioner). One word to describe my life lately is: versatile! My husband and I joke that we are living the “not-normal” life, and my career has definitely followed along that journey. Despite the variety of my roles, and my activities, there’s one constant: WATER!

Image If I was ever on one of those reality TV shows and asked what one item would describe me, without using any words, I would show a good ol’ water bottle (BPA-free.) Water is a life source, meaning, we can’t live long without it. If we go dehydrated too long, our quality of life suffers—and if we keep letting ourselves get to a dehydrated state, overtime, our health suffers.

I’ve recently become aware that not all water is created equal. Check out: www.kangendemo.com. Ouch! I didn’t realize how acidic our water can get. After being introduced to several different brands of alkaline water, I researched the benefits of a higher pH water and reasons to alkaline your body ASAP! Water can benefit your stress levels in many ways you may not know. Starting your day off with warm lemon water engages your metabolism and works as a light liver detox. Over time, this practice can lead to clearer skin, less digestive issues, and of course, detoxification. Soaking in an Epsom Salts bath soothes my mind as much as my muscles these days.  I  make my own mix of coconut oil, essential oils and Epsom Salts to add to the jet tub and soak my daily worries away. Ahhhh…

It’s been an interesting week of client sessions, and I can tell there’s some sickness going around town. When someone says, “Ew, that’s gross,” I love reminding them how they are cleaner and beautiful on the inside. Who knew chilling out would be so tough some days?

The new year came and went, and not much changed, did it? If you’re like most people, you’re hopeful that, as the ball drops, so will your stress levels, pounds, and worries. After all, it’s a brand new year; a clean slate; or something I heard often this year, a new chapter and blank page in your life’s book.  Something I focus on with my clients is the concept of mini goals and small steps. I think you should dream big, aspire to great things, and expect excellence from yourself. However, I also feel that a lot of mini goals equal big accomplishments.

I also believe in daily positive affirmations. I have post-it notes on my bathroom mirror to remind me of fundamental truths, core values, and admirable character traits I want to emulate with my daily work. I can’t control what the day will bring, but I can control how I’ll react. I react to everything better when I nurture my holistic health—when my body, mind, and spirit are on their A-game.  When I feel negative emotions creep in, I have several go-to actions I take. I’ll share those in another blog. For this one, I want to share a snapshot of simple ways to keep your cool and get back on track when you have a physical, mental, or emotional set-back.

Flavored Ice Cubes

When you’re moody, sad, hungry, irritated, stop what you’re doing immediately, pour a glass of iced water and drink. Did you know ice is an anti-inflammatory property? Our bodies get inflamed quickly during periods of trauma and stress. Plus, many times we allow ourselves to get dehydrated throughout the day. Both problems solved! Not a fan of plain water, create a collection of flavored ice cubes. Here are some of my favorites:

Berry Nice

Fill an ice cube tray halfway with pureed raspberries (or your favorite berry) and freeze. Top with water then freeze again. Top with almond milk and you have a perfect cube for your next cup of iced English tea.

When Life Gives You Lemons…

Fill your ice cube tray with lemonade mixed with thinly sliced basil leaves and freeze. Awesome in water and tea!

Spa Time

Juice cucumber and lime together and pour mix into your ice cube tray. Now you can escape for a bit by adding these to a glass of water.

Grab a magazine, book, or ear buds and relax while you detox!

Soak Your Feet

When panic or negativity strikes, reset your body with an ionic foot soak. This procedure works to detox you at the cellular level, helping you cope with internal strain. Find an Ionic Cleansing Professional in your area or grab your own device here to use in the privacy of your own home. (Training is required and provided.)

Treat Yourself

A fan of juicing? Do you miss summertime? My answer to both is YES! When I am feeling crabby or blue, I reach into my freezer for a homemade popsicle. Depending on your taste preferences and needs, you can create a myriad of tasty possibilities to help you chill out for a moment and think a bit clearer. Fill popscicle molds with one of the three recipes for ice cubes above, or for a treat, here’s a good recipe:

Berry Cool

Puree your choice berry and fill the mold with half of the puree and half almond milk, then freeze to enjoy as desired (or needed.)

A Homemade Holiday

ImageI’m the girl who gets super frustrated at how materialistic the holidays get. We just can’t help ourselves, and I’m at fault too! When I see the cute baby outfits, I think my nephews surely need one… along with the motorized truck, sing-a-long bedtime friend, and of course, they need fancy blankets, sheets, and towels. Bath toys! They need bath toys. I won’t even continue on with everything I see for my nieces. Good intentions, good-hearted gifts, but is it the reason for the season? You have to answer for yourself.

I fell for the trap again this year, but before I got to the check-out counter, I thought about how it would be fun to create something as a gift for those on my Christmas list. Further, how about something that will benefit them in a healthy way. I kept thinking as I drove home, and by the time I got home, I had four ideas. I went to work.

I don’t want to give away what I am creating for several folks on my list, but it’s meaningful, personal, and healthy, too! Here are a few ideas I ran across during my research, should you feel compelled to fight the urge to buy another (albeit beautiful) scarf for Aunt Sue. Be creative, have fun, and enjoy the magical reason for the season.   –Lacey

Organic Body Lotion

  • 1/2 cup almond or olive oil (can infuse with herbs first if desired)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup beeswax
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons Shea Butter or Cocoa Butter
  • Optional: Essential Oils, Vanilla Extract or other natural extracts to suit your preference (my faves: eucalyptus, lavender, vanilla)

1. Combine ingredients in a pint sized or larger glass jar.

2. Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat.

3. Put a lid on the jar loosely and place in the pan with the water.

4. As the water heats, the ingredients in the jar will start to melt. Shake or stir occasionally to incorporate. When all ingredients are completely melted, pour into whatever jar or tin you will use for storage. Small mason jars (8 ounce) are great for this. It will not pump well in a lotion pump!

5. Use as you would regular lotion. Use within 6 months for best moisturizing benefits.

Note: A litte goes a long way! This lotion is incredibly nourishing and is also great for diaper rash on baby, for eczema and for preventing stretch marks!

Lotion Bars (better for travelistas!)

  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 1 cup shea butter, cocoa butter or mango butter (or a mix of all three equal to 1 part)
  • 1 cup beeswax (can add an extra ounce or two if you want a thicker consistency.)
  • Optional: Vitamin E oil to preserve.
  • Optional: A few drops of your favorite essential oil(s)

Combine all ingredients (except essential oils if using) in a double boiler, or a glass bowl/jar over a smaller saucepan with 1 inch of water in it.

Turn the burner on and bring water to a boil. Stir ingredients constantly until they are melted and smooth:

Remove from heat and add the essential oils.

Gently stir by hand until essential oils are incorporated.

Carefully pour into silicon molds to harden.

Allow the lotion bars to cool completely before attempting to pop out of molds. These could be made in different shaped molds for different holiday gifts, or made in a square baking pan and then cut into actual bars.

All-Natural Lip Balm

Ingredients

  • 3 tsp Beeswax(use the pellets, they melt faster/better)
  •  6 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp shea butter
  • 1 T castor oil (for more “gloss,”)
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1/2-3/4 tsp essential oil
  • Sliver of color (like a tiny sliver from a Burt’s Bee lipstick to tint it a little pink)

Directions 
1. melted wax, oil & butter in a glass pyrex measuring cup in the microwave. Heat until all is melted and can be stirred together.
 2. Remove from heat and add castor oil, honey & any scents/colors you wish
 3. Stir and stir. The honey doesn’t want to mix thoroughly with the oils, but keep stirring and you will get it combined pretty well. 
4. Pour fairly quickly into your containers.

So simple! Basically, just melt, stir and pour!!

Oh and something for the fur-loves of your life!

Pumpkin Dog Treats 

Ingredients:

2 cups rice flour
1/2 cup natural peanut butter

1 cup pumpkin puree (one low in sugar)

2 eggs (I used 3 for more moisture)
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix ingredients together until blended, then spread dough to 1/4 inch thick and cut into desired cookie shapes. Bake for 10-15 minutes. Let cool before serving. Store in refrigerator for up to 7 days.

Yoga and God?

Is it ok for Christians to practice yoga?

I’m not sure where these misunderstandings start. Did someone want out of a yoga class? Did someone vocalize a fear and falsely accuse? Too often I am asked why I practice yoga if I am a Christian. Huh?

yoga-picture-6Yoga is therapeutic. Yoga is challenging. Yoga is beneficial to the body. It is not a religion. Yoga is a spiritual discipline, much like fasting, meditation and prayer. You will find these practices in many religions, yet none of them make a religion.

Yoga does have the ability to enhance our personal beliefs and faith in the religion of our choice. I do start and end my practice with prayer, and God is a part of my practice. How about you? What personal touches do you put on your yoga practice? Yoga’s powerful ability to blend and strengthen the body, mind, and spirit can contribute to a person’s overall well being. So, Yogis everywhere, unite despite your religious preference, and open your mind and spirit to whatever is awaiting you at the mat.

I Need A Goal!

On a recent flight, I sat next to a guy on an apparent business trip. I surmise he will be working on “work stuff” during the flight only from mere assumption over his attire (suit and tie), laptop, and briefcase ensemble.  Perfect, since I needed to clear my mind, listen to my music, and rest a bit.

“Are you headed home?” Yes. “Me, too. I have a race tomorrow.” Oh?  Do you run? “Yes, I do. Do you?” Yep!

No music. No rest.

We chatted running history, various training perspectives, clubs in Dallas, paces, next-step goals. I recalled my last half and full marathon times—to the second, and so did he. A co-worker of his chimed in with various races he did, too. We talked NYC, Chicago, and Boston. He doesn’t need a pending goal, and is starting to just “run for fun,” but the conversation leads me directly toward goal setting.

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes… Knees and Toes…

I’ll pause while everyone’s inner-80s child sings a few lines of this favored jingle. Back then; my goal was to sing the chorus as fast as possible while managing the coordinating hand movements. The first signs of my competitive spirit came out around that time too… I got good at performing this song and movement combo, and will challenge anyone who wants to try it out again.

This song came to mind, as I completed my studying and testing for my Holistic Coach Certification. Chapter after chapter, lecture and study after lecture and study, it finally clicked that wellness has so much more to do with how you feel/perform outside of the gym or what you prepare in the kitchen (or choose from the food stand at meal time.) Furthermore, it has a lot to do with energy and emotion levels and one of my favorite words: perspective.

Part of being well, is having your “head, shoulders, knees, and toes…” in alignment with what your physique and nutritional goals are. Studying about Chakras (nerve every body has them) was intriguing from the start, but I accepted it only as another perspective from holistic health professionals—nothing more. I didn’t realize how nurturing my energetic makeup would manifest into less anxiety, less fatigue, less pain, more energy, more strength, and a more joyful perspective.

You have seven Chakras within you. They are the energy centers in our body that manage our overall energy flow. Blocked energy in one or all of our seven Chakras can often lead to illness, or pain, so I thought I’d discuss these briefly to build awareness and understanding.

1. Root Chakra – Represents our foundation and feeling of being grounded.

  • Location: Base of spine in tailbone area.
  • Emotional issues managed: Survival issues such as financial independence, money, and food.

2. Sacral Chakra – Our connection and ability to accept others and new experiences.

  • Location: Lower abdomen, about 2 inches below the navel and 2 inches in.
  • Emotional issues managed: Sense of abundance, well-being, pleasure, sexuality.

3. Solar Plexus Chakra – Our ability to be confident and in-control of our lives.

  • Location: Upper abdomen in the stomach area.
  • Emotional issues managed: Self-worth, self-confidence, self-esteem.

4. Heart Chakra – Our ability to love.

  • Location: Center of chest just above heart.
  • Emotional issues managed: Love, joy, inner peace.

5. Throat Chakra – Our ability to communicate.

  • Location: Throat (duh…)
  • Emotional issues managed: Communication, self-expression of feelings, the truth.

6. Third Eye Chakra – Our ability to focus on and see the big picture.

  • Location: Forehead between the eyes. (Also called the Brow Chakra)
  • Emotional issues managed: Intuition, imagination, wisdom, ability to think and make decisions.

7. Crown Chakra – The highest Chakra represents our ability to be fully connected spiritually.

  • Location: The very top of the head.
  • Emotional issues managed: Inner and outer beauty, our connection to spirituality, pure bliss.

Now that you know what and where your Chakras are, what will you do next? You don’t have to do anything, as they’ll exist without your involvement at all; however, checking in with your energetic system from time to time can assist with your next health and wellness goal. You can nurture your body’s energetic sources with several wellness treatments: massage, ionic foot or hand soaks, chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, low-level laser therapy, Reiki work, and meditation are some of my favorites. Do you pray or wish for less pain, less fatigue, less sickness or more energy, more excitement, more endurance? Consider asking your doctor, holistic healthcare professional, or trainer about potential blocked energy in your body and ideal remedies for your situation and needs.
