I eat food….

“What do you eat?”–I must get that question a bajillion times a day. My answer is always, “FOOD!” I am not trying to be a smart a$% when I answer it that way, but its simply the truth. I don’t count calories. I know for a lot of people that works…but the problem is too many people look at the number versus the quality of the food. 100 calories of Oreos is still Oreos. For me, I like to just really think about the food that I am eating and putting into my body. The better the quality of the food and the more dense nutrition packed in there the more of it I can eat. I don’t necessarily have to worry about my portion control that way. Why?

Did you ever wonder why you can sit down and eat an entire bag of chips or a an entire pizza pie and not be full?  Yet if you are eating a steak and sweet potatoes you fill up rather quickly with no room in your belly for more? Its because the steak and sweet potato are filled with dense nutrition which signals your body that its full. When you are eating those “empty calories” filled with zero nutritional value, your body requires way more to be satiated, at which point it never really is. So when I say I eat food, and I don’t have to portion or weigh it out, its because when you are choosing food that is whole and good for you, you will know when you are full. Its when you are choosing those items that are processed and have little to no nutritional value that you really have to weigh out your portions because otherwise you will overeat.

Make better choices. Eat less food from boxes and more food from the Earth. So that next time someone asks you what you eat, you can say FOOD! Image

The right fit for you

There are so many workout clothes out there…its a colorful sea of sports bras and running tights. But beyond the bright colors and fancy designs, do you know how to dress for your body type so that you not only move functionally, but feel beautiful and sexy? That is important you know…the better you feel in your workout attire the more likely you are to have a successful workout. Truly…think about it…would you workout more effectively in an old tattered t-shirt that was wrinkled, or in a slim fitting racer back tank top and tights that not only draw you in , but make your lines look sleek and strong!

So when choosing workout apparel, what should you consider?

1. Black is always the most flattering color for pants. Not only is it slimming but you will not see sweat lines.

2. Don’t wear padded sports bra…it looks awkward.

3. Racer back tanks make your back look stronger than a traditional tank.

4. Do the underwear test…bend over in the mirror and make sure the lycra doesn’t stretch so thin that when you are in downward dog we can see your undies.

Ultimately, wear what you can move easy in and you feel strong and beautiful in! Image

Back in the day…

Meet 7th grade Danielle. Isn’t her hair awesome. I know you remember carrying around a small can of Rave hairspray in your backpack so you could respray your feather bangs and make sure they stayed high enough. And those eyebrows…wow…at least there were two.

So, what is the point here. Well, you often hear of people wishing they could go back in time, or trying to relive their glory years, when for me, I feel like I am in the prime of my life RIGHT NOW! I would much rather move forward, then look back.

I want you to live in the NOW! Learn from your mistakes and grow from them. What once was can never be again because life is constantly evolving and changing. I used to be a football player…well, okay , you aren’t any longer. Now you have to work out and watch what you eat. I just had a kid…no you didn’t, they are sixteen and driving and you can’t use that excuse anymore.

Live for TODAY and TOMORROW because you can’t change YESTERDAY. You can look back on it, smile, and reminisce, but you can never relive it! Image

Ditch the electronics….

Tired? No focus? Did you know that your technology has a large part to do with it? You could be “sleeping” enough hours, but still seem restless, and it has to do a lot with how plugged in you are throughout the day. Technology puts your body into flight or fight stress mode which imposes great stress! The more revved up you are during the day, the harder it is for you to not only wind down at night, but get into a deep state of REM. Electronics also emit a EMR (electromagnetic radiation) which again does not allow you to sleep as effectively as you might like.

How can you change this?

1. Turn off all electronics at least an hour before sleep. Give your brain some time to come “down”

2. Move your cell phone out of the bedroom or away from your bed

3. Try to limit how much technology you use throughout the day.

I know its hard to fathom limiting our technology when we live in such a high powered and fast moving world, but if you are having trouble feeling rested, this could be a good place to start! Image

Focus T 25

ImageOne thing a lot of people say when it comes to working out is, ‘I don’t have time!”. And we have all heard the expression that we all have the same 24 hours in a day. But truthfully, for some, fitting working out into an already jam packed schedule can be tough.

But what if I told you that you could get in a KILLER workout in only 25 minutes? At home! Yes, Shaun T, the creator of INSANITY has just released a new program called Focus T 25. So what does that mean? This program is 25 minutes, 5 days a week, for 50 days. What do you get done in that 25 minutes? Cardio, strength training, lower body focus, upper body focus, abs, and speed. The test group results are SICK!

Don’t tell me you don’t have time. Give me 25 minutes, and we can give you a LIFE! The life that you deserve. The body you want, the health you can reclaim.

For more information on Focus T 25, please reach out to me, Danielle, by visiting my Facebook page, fb.com/fitandfunkywithdanielle and send me a message.

STRESS……

How do you deal with stress? We all have it, just at different levels and we all have different ways that we deal with it. Some better, than others. There is no such thing as a perfect life, and there certainly is no such thing as stress free living. However, our ability to cope with stress is what separates those who crack under pressure from those who thrive. Whether its work , relationship, family, financial or whatever kind of stress life throws your way, there are different coping mechanisms to help you power through.

1. YOGA-breathing, relaxation, stretching, and getting in tune with one’s body are all great ways to alleviate stress. Even if yoga is not something you already practice, starting now might be good for your stress level.

2. Running-put those headphones in and hit the pavement. A long run can often clear the mind and allow you to find peace.

3. Exercise-any form of exercise is going to help you release endorphins and get out some of that negative energy and tension.

4. Music-there is a definite healing power to music. Whether its upbeat or slow jamz, you know what kind of music will alter your mood.

5. Talk it out-whether its a friend, a clergyman, or a mental health professional, the power of words has a great impact on stress.

6. Rest-just with anything else, when we are sleep deprived our bodies don’t have time to assimilate to its surroundings therefore making our stress level rise.

Again, life will never be stress free, but knowing some tools for working around it will make you better able to survive the tough times in your life! Image

The Healthiest Meal of the Day

So, I am not sure if you are aware, but I am a Team Beachbody Coach. Beachbody is the company that produces great workout programs such as INSANITY and P90X. But, we also have Shakeology, the healthiest meal of the day. I know, you are thinking, its just another shake, and there are tons of those out there. WRONG! This is so much more than that. With over 72 vitamins and minerals, this is a source of dense, whole nutrition that will increase your energy, lower your blood pressure, and keep you regular! It’s backed by the American Diabetes Association and is a 24 on the Glycemic Index. I take no other vitamins or supplements, just my daily Shakeology which I drink for breakfast. My hair is longer, my skin is clearer, and I am NEVER sick! My kids even love it. In fact, my oldest daughter always asks for Shakeology on testing days…she says she just feels better after drinking it. Shakeology is one  hundred percent natural and doesn’t have any added sugars, or chemically engineered vitamin sources. Everyone I love and care about drinks Shakeology, not because I sell it, but because I want them to live longer and happier. The other great part for me is that it curbs my sweet tooth. I get my daily chocolate fix in the morning, and then I have no trouble passing by a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup or chocolate cheesecake.

If you want to know more about Shakeology and what it can do for you, feel free to reach out to me at danielle@daniellehinson.com or visit my website http://teamfitandfunky.com. Not only do you get Shakeology but you get something even better, ME as your COACH! I am there to ensure your questions are answered and your goals are being met.

I look forward to hearing from YOU! Image

Summertime and kids….

So summer is fast approaching and that means your kids will no longer be in school. So the question comes up…what do with those energetic little people all summer long. We certainly don’t want them cooped up inside watching television, playing video games, and listening to their iPods. But, summer camps can also be extremely expensive, especially if you do more than one of them and have more than one child. So what are some free or inexpensive things you can do with your kids this summer to keep them active and engaged and not driving you crazy!

First, I found this website that has 120 different free things to do with your kids that you should definitely check out.  http://www.mrfreestuff.com/120-free-things-to-do-with-kids-this-summer/

Next, check your local library. They often have summer reading programs that include activities and crafts. You can also research the area where you live…I know where I live some places have dollar movie days, or discounted days at the zoo.

Are you friends with other people with children? Take turns watching them or taking them to the park or the pool so the other parent can have a day to relax kid free.

A great place to check out ideas for the summer…PINTEREST! You can find just about anything on Pinterest, so I would highly recommend searching some kid friendly summer activities on there while you are browsing boards.

Hope this helps you and your children have a fun, filled summer!Image

Be unique…

My youngest daughter Bianca is what one might call a free spirit. She is not into all the same things other kids her age are into. Her favorite movies are Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and Tremors. She loves playing with toy dinosaurs and paper clips. Her version of matching is not matching, and she loves collecting any random piece of anything she can get her hand on. There have been times where she has wore her bathrobe to the grocery store or wore winter boots with her bathing suit. And here is the kicker…I let her.

As parents, its so easy for us to think that our children have to fit into a certain mold. That little girls like ballet and butterflies and should wear ribbons in their hair. But when I realized that was not who my Bianca wanted to be, I realized, there is no mold to fit in. Everyone is unique, everyone is special, and we should honor those differences and celebrate them. If everyone of us were the same, oh what a boring planet this would be.

I want you to think about yourself for a second…are you different? Of course you are. Something makes you special and unique and different than everyone else. There is a quality about you that cannot be duplicated. YOU make the world a better place simply for being a part of it.

We live in a society where you are supposed to want to fit in, look like everyone else, be like everyone else…but WHY? Be YOU! YOU are special, YOU are unique….you like plastic dinosaurs instead of Barbie dolls and that is okay.

Today, instead of wondering what you could do to look like someone else, be like someone else, act like someone else, I want you to celebrate your unique qualities that separate you from the pack. Dance in the rain, sing in the shower, live out loud, color outside the lines….because being YOU is the best thing that you can do. I like you for who you are…the question is, do you like you for who you are?Image
