Brittany Madrid Interviews Celebrity Stylist Carolina Tolentino from the TNT Hit Show Dallas

Meet our new celebrity fashion blogger!

Meet our new celebrity fashion blogger! She is our current HH Covergirl! Welcome Brittany Madrid to the team!

Hi all you Healthy Housewives, Brittany here!  In addition to being this month’s featured Healthy Housewife, I’m going to be contributing my two cents on fashion right here on the blog!  I’ll be taking a look at our favorite trends from the runways, television, and celebrity style then giving you tips and tricks to make them work for you! My advice will always be real and the guaranteed inside scoop!

To kick off my fashion contribution, I was so excited to be able to sit down with the lovely and talented Carolina Tolentino!  Carolina is a professional stylist and has worked with several celebrities (more inside scoop on that later!).  She currently is a stylist on the hit TV shows DALLAS and Revolution.

feb blog1

Naturally, being from Dallas I was especially interested to hear about the styles featured on the hit show on TNT.

B: Who is your favorite character on the show to dress?

C: Josh Henderson’s character is the most fun because I like his style the best!  It’s a challenge to make him look masculine and refined at the same time.  Men are actually harder to style than women.

B: Which female character’s style do you like the best?

C: Jordana Brewster’s character has great style; her wardrobe is stuff I would actually wear.

B: How would you describe her look?

C: Dallas casual, she’s relaxed but always put together with jewelry and accessories.  Dallas women never look undone, and a little effort goes a long way in brightening your attitude!

B: What’s been your best fashion find?

C: I found this amazing Issa dress while vintage shopping.  It was only $5 and in a size that was much bigger than I wear.  I bought it and had it altered to fit me perfectly.  The alterations cost $30, but now I have a designer dress that looks custom made to fit me!

B: How is working on Revolution different than working on the Dallas set?

C: They are polar opposites!!!  When I’m working on revolution I’m putting mud and oil on the actors, ripping their clothes, making fake wounds…on Dallas I’m making everyone look perfectly put together.

B: Of all the celebrities you’ve worked with, who is your favorite?

C: Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) is one of the nicest people I have ever met!  He was so kind to the crewmembers and when he talks to you, he makes you feel like you’re the only person in the room!

Dwayne Johnson makes you feel like number one when talking to him!

Carolina’s Top Tips for Healthy Housewives

– Play up your assets (and never be afraid to WORK IT!)

– Work out your arms (you’ll thank yourself when getting dressed)

– Show off the part of your body you feel most proud of.  If it’s your legs, sport a sparkly mini skirt!  If the arms have it, then go with a one-shoulder style.

– ALWAYS at least wear one piece of jewelry to feel put together

– Jeans are the hardest to buy for EVERYONE, it doesn’t matter how famous or how perfect your figure is.  Carolina recommends buying one high quality pair of jeans vs. several less expensive pairs that don’t fit as nicely.

-Find a tailor who will take the time to work on altering a garment the way you want it.

– Pay attention to cut, once you find a top that’s flattering buy it in 2 more colors!  It will make your life easier and you’ll always feel confident in your default look!

– Cache’ is a great store for women 40+ because their clothes are cut to fit women, not teenagers!  They make their jeans a little higher, lending a flattering “tummy tuck” effect.

– Buy tops that have a longer fit, this will have the visual effect of lengthening and elongating your torso.

– Take care of your hair!!!  She recommends taking Biotin for hair, skin, and nails.

– Always have your nails done…even if it makes you late!!!

– Drink a lot of water

– Pay attention to posture.  Standing up straight really does affect the way others perceive you; and how you look and feel in your clothes.

I hope these tips and tricks were helpful!  We all know that beauty is from the inside out.   It starts with you feeling great and taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually.  Then once you have a healthy canvas, it’s fun to use all kinds of colors!  Always remember to have fun with fashion and never take it too seriously!

The right fit for you

There are so many workout clothes out there…its a colorful sea of sports bras and running tights. But beyond the bright colors and fancy designs, do you know how to dress for your body type so that you not only move functionally, but feel beautiful and sexy? That is important you know…the better you feel in your workout attire the more likely you are to have a successful workout. Truly…think about it…would you workout more effectively in an old tattered t-shirt that was wrinkled, or in a slim fitting racer back tank top and tights that not only draw you in , but make your lines look sleek and strong!

So when choosing workout apparel, what should you consider?

1. Black is always the most flattering color for pants. Not only is it slimming but you will not see sweat lines.

2. Don’t wear padded sports bra…it looks awkward.

3. Racer back tanks make your back look stronger than a traditional tank.

4. Do the underwear test…bend over in the mirror and make sure the lycra doesn’t stretch so thin that when you are in downward dog we can see your undies.

Ultimately, wear what you can move easy in and you feel strong and beautiful in! Image

Great Kid Finds!

This week I wanted to share a couple of exciting kid related items that I recently came across. The first one is Bento Box lunches for kids. Lately I’ve been really struggling with my daughter to get her to eat fruits and vegetables. I really have to sneak them in or even resort to bribery at times….not good! Well late one evening while enjoying one of my favorite past times…surfing Pinterest – yes I probably need a “Pintervention”. I typed in “cute healthy meals for kids” and pins and pins of Bento Boxes appeared. They really are cute and healthy and more importantly very appealing to the discriminating eye of a picky five year old eater.

Bento Boxes make kids lunch healthy, fun and colorful. I love the idea of having the meal in one container with separate compartments, rather than two or three different containers and sandwich baggies. Bento lunches are meant to be pleasing to the eye as well as delicious and there are many ways to be creative while putting together a box for your child. Some people go all out when they’re packing a bento box. They design food art in the shape of hearts, trains, caterpillars, animals and even tv characters. There are many tools to use such as colorful silicone baking cups, themed food picks, cookie cutters and the actual container itself.

Knowing where to start can be a little overwhelming so I have attached many links that I found to be helpful and an excellent blog on the tools needed and what goes in the assembly of the box.

Next I recently came across Artkive in the App store. I am so excited about this app! I have two tubs filled with my daughter’s art work. I have never been able to throw any of it away and in kindergarten it seems all they do is make art! I have really stressed about this mounting clutter which my daughter is so very proud of. Well hooray for Artkive! This app digitally saves your children’s artwork and makes it easy to share with other family members and friends. You simply take a photo, tag it, and store your child’s artwork on the Artkive cloud. You can even create photo books from their art which is my next home project!

I have attached this cute video from Artkive.  I must confess I did try to throw away a few things but I was caught red handed so this gave me a little laugh!

GapKids/DVF Collaboration

GapKids just announced their second collaboration with Diane Von Furstenberg. The collection will hit stores in April. I’m guessing there will be some adorable summer clothes and beach wear! Looking forward to picking up some pieces for my little Fashionista.

On a separate note, while researching this topic I found out Gap Inc. just purchased Intermix, a luxury boutique. Not sure what that means for either company maybe more style for Gap? And more affordable prices at Intermix? I doubt it! Hopefully some new designer collaborations at Gap… well a girl can dream!

January is Thyroid Awareness Month

Hi! Hope everyone is having a great week! January is Thyroid Awareness Month and having recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism (slow thyroid), I thought this would be a great topic to cover this week. So I’ll share my story and I hope you can find some useful information.

I went to my doctor for my annual check up which comprised of my physical check up, a little personal chat and having my blood drawn. During our chat I told the doctor I was a more tired than usual, even sluggish at times and a little scatter brained (hey I’m 41 with a very busy 5 year old so I thought it might be my new normal). She asked me if I had any physical changes and I mentioned my hair seemed thinner (again I thought the effects of my new age) and then we got to the lady questions…was my cycle regular or had there been changes. Excuse my TMI but I told her it was different every month which was very irregular for me. She then asked about my personal life and I mentioned I had gone through some personal changes and was feeling bluer than I liked (definitely not my normal no matter what personal issues I have going on).

I ended my visit having my blood drawn and she said she would be in touch with my results. Results for what I thought? I never know exactly what lab tests the doctor orders because in the past I have always received a call that everything looks great so I never ask.

Well I was totally surprised when my doctor called me to tell me that my thyroid was functioning low and she was going to put me on medication to help regulate it. For clarification the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck right below your Adam’s apple and wrapped around your wind pipe. The thyroid controls your metabolism and produces thyroid hormones T3 and T4. I immediately Googled low thyroid and found that all the symptoms I had associated with my new age were actually symptoms of hypothyroidism. I learned that my doctor ordered a TSH test which measures the amount of T3 and T4 in the blood, which everyone over the age of 35 should test for annually or if you experience any symptoms. So far I have been on my medication about four months now and I feel like a new person. The brain fog has cleared, my energy level is back up and I feel great! Thank you for reading my story and keep in my mind I’m not dispensing medical advice just hoping to bring awareness to that little unseen bowtie around your neck!

Resources for you:

According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist (AACE), “Thyroid disease is more common than diabetes or heart disease. Thyroid disease is a fact of life for as many as 30 million Americans – and more than half of those people remain undiagnosed. Women are 5 times more likely than men to suffer from hypothyroidism.”

New Year’s Eve

New Year's Eve

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed the holiday with your family! Our Christmas here in Dallas was extra special since we had a white Christmas and that rarely happens! I told my 5 year old daughter Bronwyn to sit by the window and take a moment to enjoy the beauty of the snow since it could be a long while before we see more especially on Christmas day so we did together!

Well today is New Year’s Eve (Eve) and if you are still putting together a last minute outfit and still trying to figure out if you are doing anything, I have a few easy last minute dressing ideas for you. These suggestions can take you out on the town, house party, dinner out and dinner in!

  1. Jewelry for your feet.  Pull out the stilettos with studs, rhinestones, sequins and all over dazzle.
  2. Glittery tops. Pair a glittery top embellished with jewels, sequins, or crystals with black pants or skirt. Your bottom can be in any fabric as long as it’s black.  Think leather skinnys, brocade black, short flare skirt, pencil skirt.
  3. Glitzy jackets. A blazer, tuxedo jacket, motorcycle jacket or vest will work over a simple black top and elegant pant.
  4. Long glamorous earrings will add a lot of extra to your ensemble.  Find earrings dripping with color and lots of stones.
  5. Red Lips. Not a whole lot to say here but wow! Red lips are so in now. If you go with this look, keep makeup at a minimum as to not compete with your lips.  Application notes, be sure to line lips in red and note that richer colors looks best on darker complexions while fair skinned individuals should opt for a brighter red.  You may need to buy a couple of colors at the drugstore (that’s what I did) and try a couple of shades until you find the tone you are happy with.
  6. False Lashes. I love false lashes period.  I wear them all the time but hey it’s New Year’s Eve so have some fun! I love the lashes with embellishments especially with a soft or nude lip!

Just follow at least two of the tips above and no need to stress or run out and buy something new. Remember to celebrate in moderation and don’t forget about setting your goals for the New Year! Here’s to Healthy and Happy 2013!!!!  Kathy, Fit Fashionista

Green, Good and Fashionable!

Looking for last minute gift ideas? Well I have a some suggestions for you. Green and Good Gift Guide ( is dedicated to driving sustainability mainstream.  Their website features a green gift guide. All of these gifts — over 100 in 10 categories — are carefully curated for thoughtfulness, usefulness, durability, and longevity.  And all have minimum impact on our earth. Now that’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Half United ( is a clothing and accessories company. Half of the profits from each product they sell go directly towards feeding hungry children in need.  The company is based out of North Carolina and they give proceeds back to organizations in their state and globally.

FEED ( began in 2006 when model and activist Lauren Bush designed a bag to benefit the United Nations World Food Programme’s (WFP) School Feeding program. She first created the FEED 1 bag, a reversible burlap and organic cotton bag reminiscent of the bags of food distributed by WFP, to help raise funds and awareness around these school feeding operations. It was stamped with “FEED the children of the world” and the number ‘1’ to signify that each bag feeds one child in school for one year.

To date, FEED has provided over 60 million school meals to children around the world through WFP.  Bags may be purchased now that provides meals in the USA and even specific cities in the USA. The FEED website has many great FEED bag options and jewelry to select from that feed a hungry child.

My last pick for good deed and style is Toms, One for One movement (, In 2006, Blake Mycoskie traveled to Argentina and found that many children had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. Today, Toms shoes gives to children in need all over the world. The company has also started Toms glasses which donate a pair of reading for every pair sold.

So for that last minute gift…make it green, good and fashionable! Kathy, Fit Fashionista

Nail Art Designs

Nail Art 101

A fresh coat of nail polish has always improved my outlook, no matter what’s going on in my life. An hour to sit back and relax, then step out of the nail salon feeling like a new woman.

Manicured nails are a statement, they say a lot about us from the colors we choose to the shape; playful, sexy, sophisticated, demure our manis are the polish on the cake. A mani is your most important accessory and one of the first things people notice. And judging by the fact that there is a nail salon or two on almost every street in Dallas, I’m not the only woman who feels this way.

Enter super manis…..nail art! What started as a look that most of us could not pull off (think Lady Gaga & Katy Perry) has gone main stream thanks in part to several fashion houses that brought nail art to the Runway.  Just Google, Pinterest or Instagram “nail art” and you will find hundreds of pictures and tutorials of the most creative designs and bold colors.  I could seriously scroll for hours!

And while I love looking at the creative techniques and the how-did-they-do-that designs, many of them just won’t work for us on a daily basis or in a business environment. Skulls, neon and glow in the dark polish may be better suited for someone else.

So how can we rock this trend well? Think sophisticated color palettes, simple geometric designs, and minimal glitter, did I say that? Glitter at your own comfort! Also, since not all the nail salons are in the know, go online or to Pinterest and save some of your favorite designs, then show them to your nail technician and see if they can duplicate.

I’ve chosen several images to explain nail technique rather than by colors.  Enjoy!

9 Stylish Ways to Wear Statement Leggings

Leggings are one of the easiest ways to update your wardrobe and you don’t have to spend a ton of money to achieve a stylish fresh look.  You can add leggings to tops, sweaters, dresses or a simple white tee and leather jacket for an edgy look.
You can find statement leggings in all kinds of designs, from classic black to leather to printed lace.  Leggings are everywhere in every style. You can choose different textures, sheens, prints and colors.
A couple of style notes to keep in mind when picking out your leggings:
1. If the leggings are really bright or super busy, make sure your top is a neutral and let the leggings be the focal point.
2.  If you have a little bit of thickness through the thighs and hips go for a vertical print or darker color legging that can have an embellishment to draw the eyes up and down.
3. To elongate shorter legs wear a shoe that matches your legging color.
4.  Have fun and buy whatever makes you happy or puts a smile on your face!
See the Romwe Starry Night leggings, I ordered them and can’t wait to wear with my Vera Wang motorcycle boots, picked up at the Maxx for about $69.00
Hope you all have a wonderful week! Yours truly, Kathy Fit Fashionista 🙂

Gifts That Give: UNICEF Jewelry, Salvation Army and even Your Closet!

With the Holiday season well under way it’s time to start thinking about gifts and giving.  I always love to give gifts that have special meaning and can give back in some way especially to children. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) works in over 190 countries to save and improve children’s lives.  UNICEF provides health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more to children all over the world.
The UNICEF jewelry is beautiful and very affordable and would make a lovely gift for a loved one or even yourself.  The UNICEF website is filled with many other gift ideas as well as holiday cards all benefitting children.  And while thinking of giving don’t forget about those who are less fortunate in your town or city.  It’s a great time to clean out your closets gather old, small or outdated clothing especially warm coats, gloves and scarfs and donate to the local homeless shelters and women and children’s centers in your area.  Every winter season my daughter helps me go through her last seasons clothes and we donate whatever doesn’t fit.  It makes her happy knowing she will help another child and I hope will instill a life long passion in her to help others.  Even a small gesture can go a long way.
Another great way to give and help bring happiness to children and those less fortunate this holiday season is the Salvation Army  Angel Tree Program.  In Dallas/Ft. Worth the Salvation Army will collect over 55,000 gifts from 9 area malls to distribute to children in our region.
I know there are many other fantastic programs that give so if you know of one please share with me and others who may read this.  Lets all try to reach out and help as many as people as we can in any way possible even if it’s small.  It wont be to someone else!
Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I’ll be back next Thursday, my regular blog day! Yours truly, Kathy – Fit Fashionista
