How to Undo an Overdo

ImageYou did it–rather, you overdid it. You ate too much, drank too much, or simply had two desserts you didn’t need and fell asleep on them. This morning, you feel well, frumpy. Don’t fear, you didn’t do as much damage as you think. Remember a pound equals 3,500 calories. So, even if you ate the entire box of donuts, and washed them down with a jug of whole milk, you’re out a pound. Despite the sugar shock you placed on your body, you’re going to be okay. In the whole scheme of things, it’s really not a big deal. Chock the day up to an “off day” and gear up for a new day. Here’s the game plan:

Image#1. Spend the day drinking (guzzling) water. Drink water as often as possible. You need to literally flush your system of the toxins you consumed during your indulgence.
#2. Eat 24-30 grams of fiber throughout the day. Do not go to sleep until you’ve ingested this fiber. Fiber works as a broom within your system to “sweep” out toxic buildup which makes it easier for fat cells to move through your body.
#3. Get 30-1 hour of activity. Literally, go sweat out the toxins. (Are you noticing a key word?) If possible, book an ion cleanse to help move toxic debris along.
#4. Stick to stuff from the earth: grains, water, fruits, vegetables, beans as much as possible. Grab most of your calories from these foods.
#5. DO NOT STARVE YOURSELF or limit your calories below 1,000 calories. Depending on your height, weight, and age, you need a certain amount of calories to keep the fire burning within your system. Think of your metabolism as a fire. Think of these foods as lighter fluid, which boosts flames. On the contrary, foods that are high fat, highly processed, high sodium, or with many preservatives act like dirt/sand which puts a fire out. Trust me, you don’t want your fire to burn out. If it does, your body stops burning fat and calories as efficiently. This tip is especially important immediately following a day of over-indulgence.
#6. Drink tea once or twice throughout the day. I say caffeine is a-okay!* It’s my experience that caffeine also helps keep things moving–if you know what I mean. That is exceptionally important after a splurge as well. (*I want to make it clear that there is zero scientific research attached to this statement. It is purely my personal opinion.)
#7. Your taste buds may feel a little deprived since they got a mouthful–literally–yesterday, don’t give into them. Remember that the first bite of anything is the most savory, so if you are feeling weak, just have one bite of the indulgence. One small bite will not derail your efforts.Image
#8. Get a good amount of sleep. Your muscles and digestive system regenerate as you sleep, so give your body time to do this. Also, if you’re asleep, you’re not consuming anything
#9. Plan out tomorrow’s meals. Planning ahead ensures that you’ll have the supplies needed and fuel yourself appropriately.
#10. Spend a few minutes looking in a full length mirror before you go to bed. Say three nice things about your body and appearance. Smile at yourself. heck, even blow a kiss!

Sweet Nékter

interesting juice pic

Just what I needed–beautiful purple juice (The Cure)!

Hi, Friends! It’s Brooke here, and I want to share with you my latest addiction: Nékter Juice Bar! I sure do love my caffeine, but I know I drink too much of it. So, I’ve been trying to figure out how to nourish myself enough to step away (gradually) from my beloved stimulant. I love how happy, fresh, and alive I feel after drinking a fresh-pressed juice, so I started looking for juice bars near my neighborhood. Whole Foods makes amazing juices, but they are pricier than I’d like. And if I had more sense and time management skills, I would plan ahead and juice more at home. But when I’m on the move and I need some TLC, it’s Nékter to the rescue!Healthy History

nekter

Nékter Juice Bar founders, Steve and Alexis Schulze, opened their first store in 2010 with the simple idea of providing a neighborhood juice bar where everyone could enjoy delicious, healthy fruit and veggie juices at reasonable prices. Turns out people were starving for stellar nutrition on the go—Nékter now has 26 stores and counting! Thankfully, the only store outside of California just happens to be down the street from me in Dallas—yippee! One of my client friends even surprised me with a Nékter gift card out of the blue. What a beautiful gift of health—pure plant love.

Recently, as I prepared to get out of my car and grab a juice, I watched customers come and go from the store and I was struck by Nékter’s resemblance to a hummingbird feeder, with creatures zipping in, alighting briefly for nourishing sweet nectar (!), then buzzing away. Somehow, things just feel right when life imitates nature.

Smoothies, Cleanses, and Other Treats

The Cure and spicy kale chips--nutritious and delicious!

The Cure and spicy kale chips–nutritious and delicious!

In addition to the fresh juices, Nékter offers raw vegan smoothies as well as bowls of blended fruit with bananas, granola, and other tasty bits. If you need a good crunch to offset the smooth juices, they offer nuts, trail mix, and my favorite—spicy kale chips! For an easy way to detoxify your life and kick start your path to better nutrition, Nékter offers 1-, 2-, 3-, or 5-day juice cleanses with a handy cooler thrown in. Be sure and check out the Snider Plaza location (near SMU): http://www.nekterjuicebar.com/ You’ll be SO happy you did. 🙂

Homemade Delight

My favorite juice is The Cure, and I love getting it when I’m beset by allergies or changing weather, which is often. It’s a gorgeous deep purple-red color, it’s bursting with antioxidants, and it’s delicious! Here’s my take on this tasty treat:

The Cure

(Makes 16 oz. of juice)

  • 1-1½ small beets, raw and scrubbed
  • ½ small head of broccoli, with stem
  • 1 large handful curly parsley
  • 2-3 kale leaves
  • 1 red apple, small
  • 2 handfuls red grapes
  • 4 celery stalks, with leaves

Cut produce to fit the feeder tube of your juicer. Add pieces of fruit and veggies to your juicer, collecting the juice in a medium-to-large measuring cup or pitcher. Once finished juicing, stir and enjoy!

Here’s to health, love, and juicing,

Brooke

Therapeutic Bodywork and Detoxification

Dry Saunas, Low-Level Laser Therapy, Stretching, Massage, Foot Soaks, Hydrotherapy, Detoxification, Herbal Cleanses… oh my!

EnerChi System

EnerChi System

I’d like to chat for a bit with anyone who has recently completed a fitness challenge or pushed themselves physically with any sport, activity, fitness class, or anyone who has been under extreme stress. Did I include everyone reading this? I’m here to discuss personal wellness outside of the gym—Therapeutic Bodywork and Detoxification Strategies to help you maintain a pain-free and fit lifestyle.

Stefania Molinari-Lee, Therapeutic Massage Therapist

I’m lucky to live close to Stefania Molinari-Lee, a therapeutic massage therapist, who has helped me maintain aggressive strength endurance training the past six months. If you know me, you know I am a runner at heart, but that I recently implemented challenging “boot-camp” style workouts and strength endurance training into my physical fitness routine. I set out to change my physique, and in doing so, was reminded that my recovery time and needs changed too

The soreness and stiffness in my muscles had some to do with the aggressive training (uneven running surfaces) but also with my internal inflammation levels and stress levels. Through therapeutic bodywork, Stefania was able to re-align muscles and tendons, and relieve pressure points with built up strain.  If you’re thinking, “a massage sounds relaxing,” think again? Therapeutic bodywork isn’t the relaxing, nap-time you may be used to with your current massage therapy. You’re awake and fully-engaged with each muscle release.  Although some parts of therapy bring temporary uncomfortable pressure (depending on what’s happening in your body and to specific parts), it’s short-lived and provides a beneficial part of recovery.  Don’t fret, deep breathing gets you through everything.

Image

After a session, I feel like I grow two inches, and my body is ready to go again… this time operating on all cylinders and soreness/pain-free. Of course, with all of the toxic debris released during one bodywork session, you should chug-a-lug (with water) for the next 24 hours and refuel with alkaline foods.

Image

I’m getting better at making time for stretching, yoga, deep-breathing exercises, and detoxification foot soaks; however, now I will make time for periodic visits to Stefania for therapeutic massage therapy.

There are many post-workout therapies to assist you with staying on you’re a-game. Aside from fueling with anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, alkaline foods, hydration, and adequate rest, consider checking out therapeutic massage therapy and foot detoxification soaks. Also, if it’s been a while since your last herbal detox, consider cleaning out your systems so you can recover effectively and continue performing your best!  –In health, Lacey

Time to Detox?

It's not a glamorous topic, but it'll make your health shine!

It’s not a glamorous topic, but it’ll make your health shine!

Hello friends… it’s your personal Detoxing Diva here, eager to help you move quickly from some not-so-great food and beverage choices this past weekend. I’ll start by professing: You didn’t do as much damage as you think, and it IS reversible. (Repeat often the next few days.) That said; let’s get to the good stuff.

Amazingly, I received an increase in orders for our Herbal Cleanse Monday evening and Tuesday morning. The fact this time period is right as folks are winding down there holiday weekend celebrations or making the challenging transition from “weekend mode” to “work mode,” leads me to think that lots of you are trying to un-do the weekend and get back on track with your clean eating and mean training. Let me help!

The reason I said our Herbal Cleanse is because I have a long-standing relationship with Advocare nutritional products, and the Herbal Cleanse product is an all-inclusive herbal detoxification system to “right-set” your body to cleanse itself of unnecessary toxins and to welcome the nourishing attributes of your diet and supplement choices. Good fats, bad fats; wholesome carbs, simple/bad carbs… who cares if it all gets stuck in your gut and intestines to rot?

The 10-day detox system comes in two flavors--citrus and peach.

The 10-day detox system comes in two flavors–citrus and peach.

Advocare’s WELL, TRIM, and ACTIVE lines helped me move from a flabby, skinny chick to a lean, mean, competitive machine. Okay, I’m not a machine, but I was a pretty good pageant competitor for several years, dropped 10 pounds of fat and gained muscle strength, completed two marathons and 12 half-marathons, and excelled in the corporate world for 12 years fueled with Advocare—and I’m not done yet! I retired my corporate heels to focus full-time on helping others find, create, and live their healthiest life. It’s now my job to make you aware of how important it is to detox your body regularly (among how to implement other healthy habits.)

Becoming an informed nutritional enthusiast, and an Advocare Advisor, helped me represent myself well whether I was on the marathon trail, the corporate stage, or the pageant stage—and everywhere in between. Advocare is one of several great supplement companies available to you, but I can only speak to the scientific research, NCAA-approved, athlete-endorsed attributes of Advocare’s products. For these reasons and more, I trust Advocare for myself, my family, and my clients.

If an all-inclusive detoxification system isn’t your thing, here are some helpful tips to help your body rid itself of unnecessary toxins you may be carrying around. As for that over-indulging that may have occurred (you don’t have to tell me), don’t beat yourself up. Part of living life is enjoying the moment and not worrying about occasional slip ups. Dust yourself off and get back on the healthy road.Implement positive talk ASAP! Do not let one bad meal (or one day of forgetting you’re a health god or goddess) send you spiraling into a well of woes. Accept the past and fill your week with good, clean decisions.

Essentia Water Water for blog Sweat is fat crying

Pick up some Essentia Water and chug-a-lug. People under-estimate the power of good clean, high-pH water and its ability to flush toxins quickly through your systems. Water is fuel for your digestive system. Don’t ever let your tank register empty!

Put on your favorite workout attire and get moving. Exercise and sweating are both excellent detoxification strategies. This is the week to challenge yourself. Get after it!

Detox your mind. When cravings hit, and you recall some of the treats you consumed over the weekend and start to miss the tastes—STOP! Food is not anyone’s true source of emotion. Something else is making you happy, sad, joyful, somber… figure out what it is and get to know yourself a little better. Consider jotting down some of your thoughts.

Be fiber-friendly. Most Americans do not get enough fiber. Make it your mission to consume more fiber this week. An added perk will be speeding up the detoxification process for your body. Yay!

As a treat for you, here’s one of my favorite fiber-friendly recipes using Advocare’s fiber drink powder. (You can also substitute your own favorite powdered fiber.)

A yummy way to get your fiber!

A yummy way to get your fiber!

Fiber Muffin Recipe

DRY INGREDIENTS

6 packages Fiber drink

1 3/4 cup whole wheat or gluten-free flour

1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Dash of nutmeg

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. baking powder

DIRECTIONS

Mix dry ingredients together. Then add the following ingredients:

1/3 cup honey

1 cup applesauce- the kind without sugar added

2 egg whites

1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

1/2 cup soy milk or almond milk

Fold in one large chopped apple.

Spoon into a non-stick muffin pan or use paper muffin cups in your pan. This makes 12 muffins, and you may pile the batter up as they do not raise much. Bake at 350 for about 20-30 minutes.

Happy detoxing, friends!  — Lacey
