MEET OUR DECEMBER COVERGIRL FAN WINNER!!

HH_Month_Dec_13

Last month we had a social media contest for our Healthy Housewives fans. We asked the fans to write in and tell us why we should choose them to be on our Healthy Housewives magazine cover. They had to have a high res image that we can use to be our cover. We had a ton of entries with women from all over the world that shared their stories and sent pictures, we were so overwhelmed on who to pick.

After a week of rereading and looking at which candidate would be the next cover girl, we decide on 2 women. Then we changed our entire 2014 year, to the year of fans. Without the fans, we wouldn’t be here. So, for 2014 we are picking 12 women to grace our cover. If you want to share your story and send in hi-res images that you would like to be featured as our cover, please email covergirl@healthyhousewives.com. We would love to hear from you!

Let me introduce our December covergirl Laurie Strough Smith. She is inspiring women out there with her positive attitude. She is over forty, fit, and raising five kids! Go Laurie!

Just the Juice, Please…

Image

I don’t understand why people say that juicing is expensive. My husband and I found ourselves in the market for another juicer after my overzealous, rushing tendency wrecked too much havoc on our old soldier juicer. There’s only so many times you can throw pieces in the sink and have them stay in tact. I know this isn’t a good quality and I am working on it. Not the point of this blog, however…

www.discountjuicers.com/compare.html

So here we are, researching what will become our new addition to the morning ritual of juicing. My husband wasn’t a fan at first. Well, let me back up… I wasn’t a fan at the very first. I thought juicing was wasteful, time-consuming, and unnecessary. Now, I consider juicing one of our best-kept beauty secrets with it’s ability to slow the aging process, hydrate our cells, reduce inflammation, and promote regular cleansing of your insides. Folks, this allows you to radiate on the outside! Forget the designer labels until you get this right–inside beautification equals outer room-stopper status.

Image

When I broke our juicer, I gasped immediately. How can we go on about our day? Our cells will be thirsty. My energy will be low. Mood swings? Weird food cravings? My husband grabbed my hand and talked me off my proverbial ledge by reminding me I can just eat the fruits and vegetables I had laid out on the counter. How primitive of him.

The truth is, juicing isn’t the only way to glean the cell rejuvenation that occurs when your body is nourished with quality, absorbable vitamins, minerals, and nutritional elements like FIBER (my favorite F word)! However, juicing can save you time, frustration, and money if done correctly.

Saves Time: You don’t have to brew coffee, run through the Starbuck’s line, or cut up your produce into bite-sized pieces. Because you’re getting a robust amount of vitamins, fuel, and hydration to start your day, ditch the separate breakfast item/meal preparation. Your body doesn’t need it! You can pour your juice is a glass and take it into the bathroom (beautification station) with you to get ready for your day. No need to sit at the table and eat.

Saves Frustration: No guessing what creamer to use, what protein/carb ration to prepare for your meal, and no need to worry about cravings you have upon awakening. You’re about to prepare and pour yourself a big glass of “all you need” with your juice, so chug-a-lug and praise Jesus for the great day ahead. As you sip, start your day with appreciation… for your health, your relationships, and your juicer.

Saves Money: Yes, a great juicer runs about $200-$500. We go middle-of-the-road with a $350 model, on sale. My husband was surprised by the expense at first, but when I strategically wrote out the per day cost of our juicer, and explained that for pennies a day, we can experience better health, he gave the green light (or just got tired of listening to me justify the cost.) Separately, we are a Costco family and purchase our produce in bulk. This helps several ways! I hate waste. I hate the word hate and don’t use it much… until I do. And I mean it. I hate waste, so it becomes a game of sorts to use up all the produce we purchase in bulk. I’ve even made muffins out of the pulp and rinds to salvage some of that. Also, a glass of juice is so packed with nutrients that you’re body is satisfied for a while–no need to fill in with snacks and additional caffeine to make it through your morning.

Image

We went with the Omega 8005 series, and as suspected… I love it! My husband and I have a standing date at the juicing station each morning. If he’s in a rush, I’ll take it to him or prepare a “roadie.”

When I hear folks say, “I don’t juice because it’s expensive,” I have to dig deeper. If you add up the daily caffeine source, or the afternoon pick-me-up (or that sugary treat you just “had to have,”) I’ll bet you can purchase a high-powered juicer in about 2.5 or three months. If you need to save up this way, there’s no shame in it. Invest in your health, and stop buying into excuses not to. Use the saving up time as a spiritual sacrifice or a detox of sorts. You’re detoxing from lesser nourishment to propel yourself into glam-dom. In the mean time, nourish the old-fashioned way by consuming green vegetables at every meal. (My favorite breakfast is an egg, spinach, salsa wrap.)

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, there are three different types of juicers out there: centrifugal, masticating, and twin gear. We went with a masticating one–slower speeds ensure reaping more nutrition (and juice) from the produce, including beneficial enzymes. Mmmm….

Image

NEW JUICER TIP: Use a 1:3 ratio (fruit to leafy greens) to curb the bitterness of Kale, Collard Greens, etc…

If you’re in the market for a new juicer or are nervous about taking the plunge, let me know–I’d love to help.

Happy juicing, beautiful! –Lacey

Time to Detox?

It's not a glamorous topic, but it'll make your health shine!

It’s not a glamorous topic, but it’ll make your health shine!

Hello friends… it’s your personal Detoxing Diva here, eager to help you move quickly from some not-so-great food and beverage choices this past weekend. I’ll start by professing: You didn’t do as much damage as you think, and it IS reversible. (Repeat often the next few days.) That said; let’s get to the good stuff.

Amazingly, I received an increase in orders for our Herbal Cleanse Monday evening and Tuesday morning. The fact this time period is right as folks are winding down there holiday weekend celebrations or making the challenging transition from “weekend mode” to “work mode,” leads me to think that lots of you are trying to un-do the weekend and get back on track with your clean eating and mean training. Let me help!

The reason I said our Herbal Cleanse is because I have a long-standing relationship with Advocare nutritional products, and the Herbal Cleanse product is an all-inclusive herbal detoxification system to “right-set” your body to cleanse itself of unnecessary toxins and to welcome the nourishing attributes of your diet and supplement choices. Good fats, bad fats; wholesome carbs, simple/bad carbs… who cares if it all gets stuck in your gut and intestines to rot?

The 10-day detox system comes in two flavors--citrus and peach.

The 10-day detox system comes in two flavors–citrus and peach.

Advocare’s WELL, TRIM, and ACTIVE lines helped me move from a flabby, skinny chick to a lean, mean, competitive machine. Okay, I’m not a machine, but I was a pretty good pageant competitor for several years, dropped 10 pounds of fat and gained muscle strength, completed two marathons and 12 half-marathons, and excelled in the corporate world for 12 years fueled with Advocare—and I’m not done yet! I retired my corporate heels to focus full-time on helping others find, create, and live their healthiest life. It’s now my job to make you aware of how important it is to detox your body regularly (among how to implement other healthy habits.)

Becoming an informed nutritional enthusiast, and an Advocare Advisor, helped me represent myself well whether I was on the marathon trail, the corporate stage, or the pageant stage—and everywhere in between. Advocare is one of several great supplement companies available to you, but I can only speak to the scientific research, NCAA-approved, athlete-endorsed attributes of Advocare’s products. For these reasons and more, I trust Advocare for myself, my family, and my clients.

If an all-inclusive detoxification system isn’t your thing, here are some helpful tips to help your body rid itself of unnecessary toxins you may be carrying around. As for that over-indulging that may have occurred (you don’t have to tell me), don’t beat yourself up. Part of living life is enjoying the moment and not worrying about occasional slip ups. Dust yourself off and get back on the healthy road.Implement positive talk ASAP! Do not let one bad meal (or one day of forgetting you’re a health god or goddess) send you spiraling into a well of woes. Accept the past and fill your week with good, clean decisions.

Essentia Water Water for blog Sweat is fat crying

Pick up some Essentia Water and chug-a-lug. People under-estimate the power of good clean, high-pH water and its ability to flush toxins quickly through your systems. Water is fuel for your digestive system. Don’t ever let your tank register empty!

Put on your favorite workout attire and get moving. Exercise and sweating are both excellent detoxification strategies. This is the week to challenge yourself. Get after it!

Detox your mind. When cravings hit, and you recall some of the treats you consumed over the weekend and start to miss the tastes—STOP! Food is not anyone’s true source of emotion. Something else is making you happy, sad, joyful, somber… figure out what it is and get to know yourself a little better. Consider jotting down some of your thoughts.

Be fiber-friendly. Most Americans do not get enough fiber. Make it your mission to consume more fiber this week. An added perk will be speeding up the detoxification process for your body. Yay!

To check out Advocare’s Herbal Cleanse product, go to: www.fitandfunlifestyle.com. You can learn more about the system, ingredients, and what makes it so great for your body. As a treat for you, here’s one of my favorite fiber-friendly recipes using Advocare’s fiber drink powder. (You can also substitute your own favorite powdered fiber.)

A yummy way to get your fiber!

A yummy way to get your fiber!

Fiber Muffin Recipe

DRY INGREDIENTS

6 packages Fiber drink

1 3/4 cup whole wheat or gluten-free flour

1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Dash of nutmeg

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. baking powder

DIRECTIONS

Mix dry ingredients together. Then add the following ingredients:

1/3 cup honey

1 cup applesauce- the kind without sugar added

2 egg whites

1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

1/2 cup soy milk or almond milk

Fold in one large chopped apple.

Spoon into a non-stick muffin pan or use paper muffin cups in your pan. This makes 12 muffins, and you may pile the batter up as they do not raise much. Bake at 350 for about 20-30 minutes.

Enhance Your Rest Time!

Hey busy momma, hurried corporate gal, and sassy working, college student–this is for you too! I don’t know about you, but I can’t decide which part of my wellness regime I love more: my long run days or my R&R days. I want to chat about the options for your rest and relaxation portion of your overall wellness focus. Many folks hear the words, “health and wellness” and automatically find themselves in the gym, hungry, and frustrated. Not the case, my sassy skeptics. Wellness is sexy, entertaining, and enjoyable. Your grandmother’s wellness strategies have no place in our new enlightened and energetic world. Your mother’s opinion of how to stay trim, fit, and lady-like has received a B-12 shot, and we are now collectively changing the way women care for their bodies, minds, and spirits. If we were chatting together right now, I would insist on a group toe-touch, in celebration.
Image
You’ve started implementing exercise and activity into your weekly routine. Great job! You’ve taken inventory of your pantry and refrigerator and are nourishing yourself with alkalinizing, anti-inflammatory foods. Go you! And you are supplementing with high-quality vitamins and products when necessary to give your body what it needs to optimally perform. High five, friend! Now, give it a rest from time-to-time! You are busting tail to sculpt your tail into its sexiest shape, and you’re finally fueling your temple like a princess. Let’s look at some ways to honor your hard work and give yourself the bear hug you deserve, wrapped in a big, Tiffany-blue bow!

1. Essential Oils/Aromatherapy: retreat to a private area of your home and soak or rub away the day with pure essential oils. Practice one of my favorite deep-breathing techniques by reciting the following: (breathe in) “I am grateful, thankful, and joyful.” (breathe out) “I toss out anger, hate, and shame.” Of course, this is your ritual and your day of rest so change up the words to fit your life’s blessings and challenges. The point is to breathe in goodness and push away toxic emotions. All the while, breathing in tantalizing collections of lavender, lemongrass, or eucalyptus depending on your personal favorite scents. Check out: www.youngliving.com for some fabulous pure oil options.

2. Dry Brushing: again, best if you find a relaxing, private area to brush, simply take a natural-bristle bush or loofah glove and gently rub away dead cells, circulate your lymphatic system, wake up your immune system, and support your circulation all while reducing cellulite and softening your skin. As the largest organ of your body, don’t you think it deserves some TLC? When your skin is unclogged, you’ll release more of those nasty toxins you’ve collected through the years.

3. Therapeutic baths: Find a practitioner you trust and enjoy an infrared sauna session or steam bath. You’ll be detoxing heavy metals, chemicals, and other poisons while stimulating water-based organs like your kidneys, bladder, and lungs. Consider an ionic foot soak (yours truly prefers the LectroChi Ionic Foot Soak from www.lectrochi.com) if you don’t have time to de-robe for a full-on body bath. I’ve have numerous lunch hour foot soak clients who simply need a quick re-energizing pause in their day. If you don’t have access to a practitioner, drop a few lavender essential oil droplets and some Epsom salts into your bath tub and crank up the Frank Sinatra, Adele, Enya, and Michael Buble’ playlist you titled “Me time.”

4. Yoga and Stretching: I just can’t get enough of this stuff. Carve out the time and make it count. Seclude yourself to a cooler, quiet area or room; light your favorite candle (does it get better than the scent “Breezy Beach?”); play some light-classical music. Practice your deep breathing when diving into each pose or stretch. When negative things come into your mind, say “no” and find a happy visual. Visualize a person or place that brings you joy. Set your mind thee and when it strays, simply whisper “no” and go back. When the pose or stretch is challenging, recite blessings as you hold the pose/stretch.

5. Sleep: Sometimes you’ve given all you can for the day and its time to hit the gluten-free biscuit. Why not dress in your favorite pajamas, and rub some essential oils on your pulse points. This will tell your body it is time to calm down, relax, and chat with the man in the moon a bit. Grab that fuzzy, girlie, eye mask that your husband and children make fun of and block the world (and stimulating light) from your sight. Goodnight, sweet friend!
Image
Honor your rest time. It’s part of your overall health and wellness, and will make those sexy muscles and your sassy physique look even more stunning! Joyfully, Lacey

MANicures and Mistakes

french_manicure
A small disclaimer before diving into this week’s topic: men don’t need to be cured, fixed, or polished. It is my opinion that men need to be allowed to be men. Some of my girlfriends are rolling their eyes at me as they read this. The second part of my belief is that if they are allowed to be men, they are happier, better partners in life, and that benefits us (ladies!) Whether you’re dating, married, or have male friends, I’m sure everyone agrees that it’s nice when the men in our lives are happy.

I mentioned aloud that I needed to get a manicure (and pedicure) for an upcoming beach trip. To which, my husband admitted that he needed to drop some “winter weight” for the trip. When he asked what he should do, I recalled in my head the last time I tried to manage his nutrition and plan his meals. Epic fail. I pushed too hard, and I didn’t work with his personal boundaries. (e.g.; full-bodied, quality beer is a must, not light beer; eating meat isn’t a negotiable topic; and he’s not a runner, but he is a fast walker and a weight lifter.) I pushed my ideals on him and didn’t leave room for negotiation. We both were left frustrated, uninspired, and frankly… needing a stiff drink.

In response to his comment this time about losing some weight before our beach vacation, I said, “what does that look like to you?” He explained his goal in specific detail. My second question was, “How committed are you?” To which he replied, “I’m not giving up pasta, and I’ll never eat kale… I want to have two beers three times a week… and I’ll work out five times a week for at least 30 minutes.” Since we had three weeks, this will work. Plus, I was more encouraged about his interest in healthier living, not just in the weight loss, so I got to work. The 80/20 rule fit in nicely with my husband’s nutritional criteria; Advocare’s multi-vitamins and Spark drink would ensure he received the minerals and vitamins he needed daily; and I made the commitment to do exercise time with him as often as possible for motivation, but also for accountability. I pulled out the most exciting and fun workouts I had, so he enjoyed the sweat time. When I would go for a run, he fast-walked with the pups, then we’d do weights together. Working our goals into our lifestyle is the ticket!

Fast forward to three weeks later, my husband met his goal and felt a difference. The plan actually stuck around after the vacation too, which was an added bonus for both of us. Some other benefits were the struggling together during a set of jump-squats or bench presses; the singing out loud to workout music; the looks our pups gave us as we growled through the workout; the post-exercise glow we had when we met friends for a night out. When you look, feel, and perform your best, you do all of life better. Also, when couples sweat together, they stay together. We celebrated little triumphs like when we managed to make broccoli and other greens taste yummy, or when we added to our reps during a workout. We didn’t beat ourselves up when we missed a beat with our diet or exercise routine. And when he looked up at me from a bowl of his favorite pasta creation and said, “It’s my 20% babe…” I just had to smile.

Working out with a spouse (or friend, or child) is fantastic mutli-tasking! Quality time and a workout!

My husband and I at a messy 5k showing it doesn’t always matter who wins. If you’re getting healthy together–everyone wins!

Men and women have varying goals, motivations, and commitment levels. We’re each willing to give up different things. Conversely, we have those things we refuse to give up. My toes will always be ready for flip flop season, and my husband will always have his morning cup of coffee. The key is to find ways to implement healthier habits into your life together and to always keep first things first… like family, friends, and laughter.

Some FUN Q&A from Our Home to Yours

“Does golfing with the guys count as my activity?” Only if you do squats before you swing at each hole.

“Do the beers I have on our date nights count?” Not if we are both smiling and enjoying the time together.

“Is all sugar bad?” Not if it’s in a dessert I want, and we share.

“The kids want to order pizza and stay in with us Friday night, can we eat that?” Yes we can and with gratitude over the fact they want to stay in and eat pizza with us. (This is a 20% situation.)

“What do you want to bet?” Loser has to do 25 pushups (especially funny if we are out in public.)

Keeping healthy is a family affair... sometimes it's messy, but we are committed!

Whiter Teeth in a Flash

image

If you’ve been considering whitening your teeth but haven’t done the deed yet, consider this, “Since teeth naturally yellow as we age, whitening them will automatically make you look younger”, says Kim Harms, DDS, a practicing dentist and a spokesperson for the American Dental Association. What’s more, a 2008 Columbia University Study found that women with healthier-looking teeth earn more than those with less sparkling grins. Sign me up!

So let’s look at the different options out there and what’s best for you. Whiteners work in gel, strip, or liquid form to dissolve surface stains on your teeth. The enamel of your teeth is extremely porous and absorbs pigments from food and drinks. Peroxide bubbles on those surfaces and lightens those pigments.
image

If you have certain kinds of dental work, i.e. veneers, caps, or crowns, remember lighteners will not penetrate those surfaces. Likewise, stains caused by antibiotics, and tetracycline are also very hard to remove, so see your dentist. They will know which methods are best for you.

At home kits
Easiest to use: Rembrandt Whitening Strips $24 for 7 sets, drugstore.com, results in 4 days

image
Slide the thin plastic film over your teeth and let the peroxide soak in for 30 minutes once a day. Users said they are comfortable to wear, and there’s no goop to ooze out. However, they can cause sensitivity on gums, but it went away in a couple of days. Also, the flavor wasn’t the
best.

Biggest change: GoSmile Advanced Formula $89 for 20 ampoules, sephora.com, results in 2 days
image
Pop open the ampoule and swab on the whitening formula twice a day-no rinsing or brushing. One tester said she couldn’t even tell the whitener was on her teeth.

Fastest: Aquafresh White Trays $40 for 7 sets, Walgreens.com, results in 1 day
image
Pre filled trays are slipped over your teeth for 30-45 minutes once a day. Users said the treatment is convenient, and the gel doesn’t taste bad.

If you see a pro:
The whitening agents salons and dentists use are 3times more powerful than home versions, and you’ll see results faster. For a dramatic change consider laser whitening. First, rubber guards are placed over the gums to protect from sensitivity. Then teeth are coated with a bleaching agent and a light is aimed at them to activate the gel. The entire procedure lasts about an hour and could whiten your teeth 6-8 shades in one visit and cost about $249.

Good luck ladies! Share with us what has worked for you.

New Year’s Eve

New Year's Eve

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed the holiday with your family! Our Christmas here in Dallas was extra special since we had a white Christmas and that rarely happens! I told my 5 year old daughter Bronwyn to sit by the window and take a moment to enjoy the beauty of the snow since it could be a long while before we see more especially on Christmas day so we did together!

Well today is New Year’s Eve (Eve) and if you are still putting together a last minute outfit and still trying to figure out if you are doing anything, I have a few easy last minute dressing ideas for you. These suggestions can take you out on the town, house party, dinner out and dinner in!

  1. Jewelry for your feet.  Pull out the stilettos with studs, rhinestones, sequins and all over dazzle.
  2. Glittery tops. Pair a glittery top embellished with jewels, sequins, or crystals with black pants or skirt. Your bottom can be in any fabric as long as it’s black.  Think leather skinnys, brocade black, short flare skirt, pencil skirt.
  3. Glitzy jackets. A blazer, tuxedo jacket, motorcycle jacket or vest will work over a simple black top and elegant pant.
  4. Long glamorous earrings will add a lot of extra to your ensemble.  Find earrings dripping with color and lots of stones.
  5. Red Lips. Not a whole lot to say here but wow! Red lips are so in now. If you go with this look, keep makeup at a minimum as to not compete with your lips.  Application notes, be sure to line lips in red and note that richer colors looks best on darker complexions while fair skinned individuals should opt for a brighter red.  You may need to buy a couple of colors at the drugstore (that’s what I did) and try a couple of shades until you find the tone you are happy with.
  6. False Lashes. I love false lashes period.  I wear them all the time but hey it’s New Year’s Eve so have some fun! I love the lashes with embellishments especially with a soft or nude lip!

Just follow at least two of the tips above and no need to stress or run out and buy something new. Remember to celebrate in moderation and don’t forget about setting your goals for the New Year! Here’s to Healthy and Happy 2013!!!!  Kathy, Fit Fashionista

Beauty Supplements that Really Work!

beauty1

Could your beauty routine use a booster shot?  As a girly girl and beauty guru, I’m always looking for the latest greatest items to add to my regime.  Here are a few noteworthy supplements worth a try.

image<
Murad Clarifying Supplement $43
I have prescribed this one to many of my teen acne clients. When taken regularly it makes a definite difference. Murad claims it provides a powerful internal defense against breakouts. Reduces blemishes by 55% in only 6 weeks.

image

Phytophanere Dietary Supplement for skin and nails $50

Phyto has been around for awhile. And with celebs like Jennifer Anniston giving credit for her famous locks its no wonder!

Here’s what one woman said about it.

I’m 41 and I decided to buy this over a year ago. I used it for about 6 months
and noticed that my hair stopped falling out. I’d notice the hair loss only when
I’d blow dry my hair. There would be hairs all over the bathroom floor. After
about a month of using these vitamins, it dramatically improved! However, due to
the cost, I stopped ordering it. I went without it for about 3 months and I
started noticing all the darn hairs around the floor again! UGH!!
I ordered 2
bottles and plan to keep this in my daily routine from now on! I’ve learned my
lesson. It’s worth it BIG TIME!

ZenMed Derma Cleanse Capsules $30

If you’re looking to go the more natural route this one’s for you.  It promotes a healthier complexion from within. This herbal formulation based on Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine principles, aids with the body’s natural elimination processes.

Give ’em a try! You won’t be dissapointed

Cheers!

Savor the Moment

Hi there! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. My holiday was joyful, slightly stressful, kind of relaxing, mildly active, and over too quickly. This description seems to fit a lot of my days lately, and I’m not sure I like it! I try my best each day to enjoy every moment, to savor tastes and experiences, to remember the details of things, the feel of loved ones’ hands and hugs, and my soul’s ebb and flow as these gathered pieces are documented inside my memory. I never know when I’m going to need these pieces again, but I continue to gather them and store them within reach. I’m a noticer of things and a writer. Often these identities are interchangeable. However, you don’t have to be a “writer” to be a noticer. You just have to pay attention.

Life moves so quickly, and as a productive member of society, you are expected to accomplish a ton of things—make a living, feed your family, pay your bills, maintain your relationships as well as your Facebook status, get enough exercise and adequate sleep, and—oh, nurture your inner life. Sometimes I get so busy with the grind of daily life that I look back at the week and I can’t even remember what happened! The very worst part is that I’ll be trying to survive day by day, thinking that I need to check in with my friends and see how so-and-so is doing, and suddenly there’s NEWS. A close friend is suddenly pregnant . . . or getting a divorce . . . or has just lost a parent . . . or is finally getting married. And I didn’t even notice. I feel like I’ve missed an important piece of their life, and I have! I try to avoid this terrible fix by slowing down and paying attention, checking in with my peeps and scanning their horizons for situations that I should be attentive to. This always involves stepping away from my life and breathing in air less manic than my own. One of my very favorite ways to gain some perspective is to crack open my well-loved copy of Sarah Ban Breathnach’s Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy.

I discovered this book when I was in college, and I fell immediately in love with the whole thing. First of all, it’s a pink book, for goodness sake—who wouldn’t love that? But the inside really got me. It’s organized into daily entries, each beginning with a quotation. And if you haven’t noticed yet, I love quotations. The book celebrates the sublime magic found in everyday life by encouraging the reader to notice even the smallest moments in her surroundings. It introduced me to the concept of a gratitude journal and invited me to write down five things I was grateful for each day. It gave me small doses of its message to savor the world and inspired my creativity. It’s no coincidence that this time in my life was happy, full of possibilities, with a gleam around the edges. I realized that by my noticing small wonders, time seemed to slow down and my friendships glowed.

So, when you find yourself getting super busy and start to wonder where the time has gone, be aware that you may be missing some monumental moments in your or your friends’ lives. If this bothers you, I hope you will stop and breathe deeply. Gaze around you and drink in the view. Be thankful for your blessings and the fact that you have this day to do just that.

XO, Brooke
