The Hipssister goes where you go!

The HipS-Ssister goes where you go!

Hey guys!

Part of what I love about being a member of the Healthy Housewives Team is that we get to try out cool active wear and accessories. I had the opportunity to take the HipS-Sister athletic accessory for a trial run today, and I give it FIVE STARS (out of five stars!) There is only so much a picture can show you, so I made a video for you before my run. Take a look…

And off I go…

Sure, you may not be heading out on a long distance run, but I’ll bet you would love the opportunity to be more compact. As cute as your purse or handbag may be, sometimes we just want to be free of the baggage altogether! I know that with so many fancy designs available, I’ll be ordering a few more colors and prints for myself. You can even customize it of your favorite sports team or charity event. Take a look at HipS-Sister to see for yourself. Or check them out on Facebook and Twitter!

SNEAK PEEK FROM OUR LATEST SHOOT!

Yep, we sassed it up this time!

Yep, we sassed it up this time!

Hey HH family, friends, and fans,

I just wanted to share some pics from our latest shoot. Every year in January we start off by doing a shoot for new website content, social media ad campaigns, and to showcase our current physiques.

Every year our image changes with what we are feeling. We know our home base look is fitness but that is a no brainer. We love all types of looks from very conservative to sexy. We love to showcase the different looks in life. Most days, we our in our workout gear with no make up. We are training our clients, working out, or running errands.

This is how I look at 5 am=hat and no make up!

This is how I look at 5 am=hat and no make up!

So when we can get our makeup/hair professionally done, then that is what we are going to do for a fun shoot. I don’t mind wearing no make up and getting my nails dirty but I sure love getting dolled up. My inner vixen comes out to play at the shoots. Kind of like an alter ego if you will.

Make and hair check before I get on set.

Make and hair check before I get on set.

After we get all dolled up then we start with the shoot line up. We had 6-7 looks to shoot that day. It takes a lot of work and effort to coordinate a shoot. You have to make sure it fits about 8 people’s schedule. The hair/make up people, the five of us, and the photographer. Then it is picking out tearsheets and finding outfits.

Selfie check before we start shooting.

Selfie check before we start shooting.

Then after that, we have to have a meeting to make sure we are all on the same page. An average shoot starts at 9:30 am and ends at 6 pm. That is being in hair/make up for over an hour to eating lunch to shooting. But when the shots come on the photographers screen, all the hard work and effort was worth it!

Us looking at the computer screen for the right shots.

To get 5 girls to have thier best faces and thier bodies to look awesome for the camera is harder than you think. Every pictures one of us had a goofy face or our body was in the wrong position and was not flattering. Since our ad campaigns our very specific, so are our pictures to get the right shot.

you can never take enough selfie's at a sexy shoot. I never look like this in real life, well, maybe for my husband! ;-)

Shot after shot we were nailing it. All in all it was a great day. We can’t wait to show you what we have come up with to share with you our message. Thank you all for supporting us and our mission-YOU!

New App I Love! Popsugar Active

Hey everyone! Kathy here! Just wanted to share a quick fitness app that I found and love.

Its the Popsugar Active App which makes working out convenient and fun.  There are tons and tons of workout videos that are continuously updated.  I love the Victoria’s Secret Booty Burn Model Workout and the yoga workout for back fat.

You can create and customize your own fitness routines with all of the videos which range from strength training, running yoga and more.

Below are some screen shots from the app.

Wish I had more to share this week but I am completely and creatively drained! The days leading up to the photo shoot can be stressful and now I’m straight into completely my final weekend for Gyrotonic training.  That’s a wrap!

Quality Maintenance

You’ve heard the terms high maintenance and low maintenance, but I’d like to introduce: Quality Maintenance! You can imagine the debate I’ve sat smack in the middle of for most of my adult life:

When is someone considered high maintenance?

Being “raised” on the Texas pageant stage doesn’t help grow my low maintenance perception… Neither does being a professional spokesperson. For that matter, neither does being a Healthy Housewives Team Member. (Especially on weeks where we have a photo shoot or appearance booked.) From the outside, I’d say some days I appear downright high maintenance. Not true! I’d like to share some of my Low Maintenance Momma Tips with you, so you can be high maintenance in disguise with me.

Skin Care

I use Dial Bar Soap on my face. (I’ll pause for the gasps.)

A Dermatologist shared this tip with me as a way to detour breakouts and combat my combination  (I say, oily) complexion. When I travel, I cut the bar in half (or in fourths for smaller for quick trips) for easily packing and use on the road.  (I do use a super-secret face oil afterward that moisturizes and protects my youth. This is proprietary info at this time.)

Image

Body Care

Coconut Oil is my skin lotion, lip balm, teeth brightener, hair moisturizer, cuticle softener, foot scrubber (when melted to a liquid and mixed with sea salt). When I travel, I put a few scoops into a small container and I’m set.

Image

Hair Care

I try to go 3-4 days without washing my hair. Before you judge my nastiness factor, let me say that I have super dry hair. I’d even add a ‘duper’ to that. I wash my hair one day, style the next day, style the following day with a spray of dry shampoo on my roots, and if I need/can, I’ll even do an up-do the following day—then wash my hair again.  I use Kenra brand dry shampoo and hair spray. LOVE IT! No it’s not all-natural, but it works. If you find something all-natural that works as well, let me know. I’ll give it a try! (I haven’t found one yet.)

Image

Nourishment

I don’t have time to cook, or prepare food every day. Rather, I don’t make the time. It’s not worth it to me, because I know I can get the nourishment my body needs from blended nourishment (I am a juicing queen—it takes a total of seven minutes from start to finish, especially if you cut produce ahead of time and store in your fridge. I make time for this. It’s a self-commitment and conscious decision. I will hang up with you to get my juicing in.) and supplements. Call it what it is—it’s my life and it works for me. The Standard American Diet (SAD) hasn’t impressed me in a while, and sadly, it appears to be getting even more difficult to find convenient, organic options sprinkled among my daily activities and obligations. (I love traveling to the West Coast—most airports there have a few all-organic food stands to choose from.) OneBode whole foods supplements travel well and have a permanent spot in my luggage and purse. Lectro Life’s ImmuneCleanse and UltimateO2 products are also daily consumables. I find a smoothie or juice bar as often as possible when I am out and about. Drinking my ideal ratio of carbs, protein, and fat is fine with me. I have stuff to do!

Image

Be sure you receive a quality ionic foot soak. There’s too many cheaply made alternatives out there. I trust Lectro Life Technologies!

Relaxation

I exercise daily (I’m worth 30-50 minutes and so are you.) and yes, it’s a stress reliever. I love my Lectro Chi Premier Foot Spa and soak my feet while reading the mail, news, or a good book. (Let’s not lie, some times I am on a conference call… but it’s still relaxing if your feet are soaking in warm, ionized water.) Sometimes I’ll just stare into space and hold one of my pups. Depends on the day I’ve had. I do share massage swaps with my husband. He rubs my shoulders and neck, and I rub his back. We also give each other bonus points for quality time.

DISCLAIMER: I occasionally treat myself  to a massage or pedicure with a girlfriend or for special occasions (PMS). My hair IS high maintenance. I own that one.

Feeling and looking your best doesn’t mean you get a speed pass to high maintenance status. Be kind to yourself, be real with others, and invest your time wisely. As I learned just this week as I said goodbye to a loved one, life is way too short and you just never know what tomorrow will bring. Celebrate the moment right now—for this moment is your life. Maintain your quality, sassy self without stressing!   –Lacey

Form and Technique

Image

You can work out until the proverbial cows come home, but if you do not have proper form, you are making the process take that much longer. Proper form is KEY to success. Form over speed equals results. Its a simple formula that works time and time again. You don’t have to be a fitness professional to have good form either. It starts with self-awareness, and is followed up by listening to the instruction and tips from those in the fitness industry who can help you. Video yourself, or watch yourself in the mirror, to ensure you are doing your moves properly to get the best possible results. Here are a few tips in some standard moves that you can start with:

1. SQUAT–all the weight should be in your heels. Feet should be hip width apart, toes pointing forward (in a traditional squat). Your butt should be back, back flat, and chest up. Your range of motion will depend on the mobility through your hip flexors and hamstrings. Be sure to not let your knees go over your toes or let your heels come off the ground.

2. LUNGE–your ears, shoulders, and hips should all be in alignment. Think of a pole running through a carousel horse. Toes pointed forward, legs bent making ninety degree angles. Your knee should not go past your toe and your body posture should be tall.

3. PUSHUP–hands wider than your shoulders so that the work is in your chest, not your triceps (for a standard pushup). You should be in solid plank form. Gaze out, not down so as to keep your neck and head in alignment. Your butt is down, back is flat, and hips are lifted. Body stays in plank alignment and as your elbows bend and your body pushes towards the floor and back up.

4. PLYOMETRICS–start and stop from the squat position to keep your knees safe. Always land toe, ball, heel. Explode off the ground and land as softly as possible.

5. PLANK–hands directly under your shoulders. All the weight pressed into your heels. Butt down, back flat, hips lifted, neck and head in alignment.

In a Hurry? Drink Up!

Come on, let's go!

Come on, let’s go!

Hey peeps! It’s Brooke, here. Is it hard for you to squeeze in your recommended 3-5 daily servings of vegetables? Are you waiting until lunch (or even worse, dinner!) before laying eyes on your first piece of produce? Oh no, this will NOT do! You deserve better than this, and so do I. But sometimes life’s a bit of a struggle, isn’t it? I barely sit still enough to eat, or at least eat as well as I want to. And I often eat my food in shifts (e.g., scrambled eggs at the counter before getting ready, then my oatmeal and my protein shake packed in a cooler to take with me to work). It’s not the greatest system, but it gets me through most mornings. Lately, however, I’ve been trying to take better care of my husband and myself. I’ve loved concocting fresh juice to start our days feeling happy and light.

If you’re a crazy person on the go like me, you’re probably pretty tight with your juicer and blender already. If not, now’s the time to make friends with these kitchen helpers, because they will save you from yourself 😉 Here are a few of my favorite recipes for you to try. They are super easy and delicious!

Freshly-Pressed Juice, aka Liquid Gold

Cut produce, if needed, to fit your juicer’s feeder tube. Feed veggies and fruit into the juicer, and capture the yummy goodness that comes out of the spout. Stir fresh juice, and pour into glasses. Garnish with mint sprig if you like (and I always like ;).

Blend, Baby, Blend

Berry Spinach Smoothie

Berry Spinach Smoothie

Serves 2, or 1 if you hog it for yourself like I did! (makes 20 oz.)

  • 2 handfuls baby spinach, washed
  • 1 c. almond milk
  • 4 strawberries, organic
  • 4 raspberries, organic
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I chose Sunwarrior Raw Vegan Classic Blend, but any protein will do)
  • 1 Tbsp. almond butter
  • Dash of cinnamon
  • Dash of cayenne pepper, optional
  • Ice, for desired consistency

Blend spinach and almond milk together until spinach has been broken down. Then add berries, protein powder, almond butter, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. Last, add ice and blend until the smoothie is desired consistency. Talk about a delicious, nutritious powerhouse of a smoothie!

Black Bean and Salsa Lettuce Wraps from Kathy

Happy Thursday Everyone! I wanted to share my recipe for black bean lettuce wraps with you.  I usually live on salad and love eating greens and veggies but sometimes during the winter, salad just doesn’t cut it.  I feel I need something warm and hearty. This recipe satisfies my love for salad with something warm, tasty and healthy!

 Enjoy!

Kathy

Ingredients

For the Bean Filling Mixture:

  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 14 oz can organic black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 packet Simply Organic taco seasoning
  • 6 leaves of organic bibb or iceberg lettuce

 For the Salsa:

  • 1 avocado, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 fresh jalapeno, seeds removed and chopped
  • 1/2 small fresh squeezed lime
  • 1/3 cup chopped cilantro leaves
  • sea salt and pepper to taste

 Instructions

  1. Prepare the salsa and set aside. Combine all ingredients in a bowl, mix well and add salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat, add onion and garlic.
  3. Saute onion until soft.
  4. In a bowl combine the rinsed black beans and taco seasoning.
  5. Add the beans sauté pan and simmer until well heated
  6. Layer beans and the salsa over lettuce and wrap tight. You can use a toothpick to secure until ready to eat.

Thought this was cute! Hopefully made you smile!
