Shanon 7 months preggars

Hey everyone!

It’s Marzia Prince. I wanted to share a fun story and a couple beautiful images of my good friend Shanon Griffee.

As some of you know, The Healthy Housewive’s co-owner Shanon Griffee is 7 months preggars. She is one of the most beautiful expecting mothers I have ever met. From her down to earth personality to her natural beauty.  With any pregnancy, every woman has their own journey. I like to think of them as female war stories. Every time mothers get together to tell their pregnancy journey, you never know what is going to be said. Some good, some bad, and some very ugly! I have heard it all. But nonetheless, whatever the journey, life brings you little bundle of joy and every woman says the same thing. It was worth it.

Rewind 2 1/2  years ago to when I met Shanon Griffee. I was signing autographs at the Ronnie Coleman Classic in Texas. She had come up to me to get a picture. I thought she was so  sweet. We talked briefly and she told me she was competing in the bikini category. It was her first NPC bikini show. (I remember my first competition-NERVE RACKING!) She went on to compete that night. A few weeks later she emailed me asking to train her. We happen to live in the same town and a couple miles away from each other. I had an opening and trained her for her second competition. During her training, we became fast friends. Even our husbands became friends too. Over the next couple of years we went on trips and spent the holidays together as well. I knew I had made a life long friend.

Then last year September 2011. I had just finished working the Olympia expo for Gaspari Nutrition in Las Vegas. Shanon and her husband flew out to Las Vegas to come hang out with my husband and I after the expo. That Saturday night we decided to meet at a Mexican Restaurant and watch a Las Vegas show. We agreed on Mexican for dinner. At the table we were ordering drinks. Everyone ordered a margarita or a beer except Shanon. I looked over at her ordering water. I said “What! We are in Vegas. Order an alcoholic beverage.” She looked at me and said “I would but I am pregnant.” My mouth dropped to the floor. I was like “OMG! WHO! WHAT! WHEN! WHERE! WHY!” No, I didn’t ask all that, but I was in shock, it was totally unexpected. She got me! At the same time I was in shock, I was happy  for her. She did want a family and this was her time.

As the months go  by (and boy they go by really fast!) I watched her go through her journey some good-She shared her ultrasound dr appt with me and we got to see baby Griffee, and some bad-She had bad morning sickness for the first 3 months. But whatever day I saw her throughout her journey, she was a trooper. I have to say, I give her props for the day she hung in there for our Healthy Housewives workout DVD. It was a full 8 hour day and she was so sick from nausea form the hormones.  I wasn’t quite sure she was going to make it. But nonetheless, she did.

At 6 months, her family threw her a baby shower in California. (That is where Shanon is originally from.) Her family asked if I would fly out there and surprise her at the shower. So, I end up getting her back and surprising her that weekend. She looked confused when she saw me there. (I hope that was good! LOL!) It was a great time and was fun to meet her family.

Shanon and I at her baby shower in California.

So fast forward to last Thursday. Shanon shot her 7 month preggo shoot. I wanted her to capture her at her best with her cute baby bump before the infamous “preggo bloated look” took over her body during the last trimester. As she got made up and shot outfit after outfit, I looked at her on the set and thought “Wow, she really is glowing from the inside out!” She looked gorgeous in every outfit change.

Shanon is due in May this year and I know that all the Healthy Housewives and I wish her a beautiful and happy rest of her pregnancy. We are all eager to meet baby Griffee. Oh, and did I tell you that she is having a baby girl! Yes, a future lil healthy housewife!

Shanon, we all love you and wish you a happy healthy baby girl and a fun journey to familyhood!

Swap Party!

Hey everyone, it’s Shanon G. Tell me if this sounds like any of you out there- you look into your closet and say”I have nothing to wear!” Sound familiar? Well my girlfriends and I have all said this same thing so we decided to do something about it, It’s called a swap party!
A swap party offers friends the chance to clean out their closets and bring their unwanted stuff to swap with one another. Swap parties are fun, thrifty and a great way to find new things we want in exchange for things we no longer need – for free.
Why Have a Swap Party?
It’s a fun way to get something we need in exchange for something we no longer use. It’s economical, eco-friendly and a great excuse to throw a party!
Here are 10 steps to having you own swap party:
1. Decide on the date of your swap party and invite everyone that you think would have some cool clothes. The best way of doing this is with emails. In the email, make sure that you tell your friends what it’s all about.
2. Make up 3 “value spots” on a table or on the floor. Mark them as Cheap, Midprice and Expensive.
3. Create tickets for each pile (about 20 for each). Make sure you leave a spot for people to put their names. A good thing to do is go to the store and pick up 3 different colored post-it notes, one color for each pile.
4. When your partygoers arrive, tell them to put each item they have in the value spot that they think suits it best. For each item they put down, give them a corresponding ticket and tell them to put their names on each.
5. Once everyone has arrived, tell the party to put their tickets into a box.
6. Put some cool music on to keep a festive mood going.
7. Get the box of tickets and shake them all up. Reach in and pick out a ticket (you can ask random people to do this to make it more fun.)
8. Each ticket you pick will say a name and have the color of a value spot. So, for example, if a ticket says EMILY and MIDPRICE, then Emily can go and pick something from the Midprice pile.
9. When Emily has chosen her item she sits down and the cycle repeats.
10. If Emily chooses an item that somebody else really wants then they must object. If there is an objection then you can play a game such as rock, paper, scissors to see who gets the item.

When working with my clients the most common issue I see is dehydration. It shows up on all skin types of all ages. I usually start with questions like; “What are you using to cleanse your skin?, Are you exfoliating, what method and how often?, and What are you using to replenish moisture in your skin?” If they’re doing the basics on that front I’ll dig a little deeper. “How much water do you drink?, What about caffiene?” The answer is usually, ” I drink a ton of water, I don’t understand why I’m so dehydrated.” Ok, I understand the thinking that water= hydration. But really that’s only half the story.

As an esthetician, I see all sorts of skin types and conditions. I also recommend treatments and at home care to remedy them. The third item we discuss is diet. To the point where I’m asking,” what did you eat for breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner?” The bottom line almost always is they are not eating enough fat!
It REALLY affects your skin! The issue isn’t how much water are you drinking, its how much are you holding on to? Here’s how:

Getting enough “good” fat is vital to the health of every cell in your body. It lowers cholesterol, supports brain and heart function and connective tissue. Since skin is my thing that’s what I’m addressing. Our skin is the body’s largest organ and as such it gets the last of every nutrient we put inside. Every cell has a lipid (fat) layer around it. Called the lipid-bilayer. Think water balloon. That layer needs to be replenished and kept strong. It’s the cells defense, and lets in nutrients and water, and keeps out attackers like free radicals. If the cells defenses are down and the lipid layer is comprimised, like an attack from a free radical, its like taking a pin and poking a water balloon. Flat and wrinkled, not plump and smooth. Picture raisins and grapes. What’s the only difference? Water. But they look entirely different, right?

So, how do we give our skin cells the healthy fats they need? Omega 3’s in the form of food and supplements. Try to get three servings of good fats every day and supplement. If you have skin that’s on the dry side you’ll need to add a bit more to your diet and supplement as well. For example a 3 oz serving of salmon would be considered a protein and a fat, ten to 15 almonds is one serving of fat. Other foods that contain omegas are (in the serving size) 3-5 walnuts, 2-3 tablespoons of ground flaxseeds, or 1-2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil, 1/4 c unsalted pumkin seeds, 1 egg yolk, fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, and cod. To supplement get cold pressed oils and drizzle on veggies, they have a butter flavor, and mix in smoothies and oatmeal. I use Spectrum organic flax oil in my oatmeal every morning and I just saw they have cinnamon flavor now, cool! Cook with unrefined coconut oil and olive oil. So you get the idea! Now go eat some fat!

Healthy Housewives

Ok, so we enjoyed the holidays a little too much and now it is time to clean up our systems! Holiday food can slow our bodies down and make us feel gross. Once a year I like to do a raw food detox for 14 days to clean out my digestive system. Detox’s are great to cleaning out our system and healing our bodies. We need to have our bodies working efficiently so that we can burn some fat, build lean muscle, and feel great! Here is my own personal raw food detox. You can do this for 3 days, 7 days, or 14 days. It is about 90% raw. there are some cooked foods like beans. The fresh, raw enzymes of the food will give you that energy you need to kick start your clean eating. If you are new to eating clean, I suggest 3 days. If you…

Hale to Kale!!

Hey Guys! It’s Sandy C. I just wanted to mention another “superfood” I have recently became fond of, It’s Kale!  I have always loved my spinach, from nibbling on it when I was a kid fresh from Mom’s garden to woofing it down when I was pregnant…. no pickles and ice cream cravings,  I just had to have a bag of spinach a day and about 4 oranges to satisfy my cravings!  Anyway, my spinach has to share the love with this new healthy leafy green vegetable. Kale is actually in same family as cabbage, collards, and brussel sprouts called the Brassica family. This green is packed full of nutrients such as vitamin A , vitamin C and loaded with vitamin K! (1327.6% of daily value in 1 cup to be exact!) Kale is also full of several types of antioxidants making it great for  anti-inflammatory purposes, is a cancer preventative, and provides great support for the detoxification processes of our bodies. Another great thing about this nutritional  plant is that it can be consumed in so many ways. I have found it in recipes ranging from salads and soups to smoothies and chips! If you haven’t already, you need to try it . I love having it in a salad with dried cranberries, a little feta cheese, and pecans or walnuts with my favorite salad dressing, a raspberry/ walnut vinegarette. Yum!  This vegetable that has been rated as one of the healthiest vegtables out  there!  So I say, Hale to Kale!

How safe is your body lotion?

Shelly Mac here!

A study by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and health said that there are 884 toxic chemicals in personal care products. Seven hundred and seventy eight cause acute toxic affect. What does that mean in English? That means that it could cause a headache, it could cause a rash, it makes you sick in some way right away. One hundred and forty six of the chemicals can cause tumors. Now some of these tumors are like cancer. Some are not cancers, but some of them are. Three hundred and fourteen can cause developmental abnormalities. What does that mean? It means that if you put it on yourself when you are pregnant, that your baby might not be normal. What? Sounds disturbing right? Here’s a list off top ingredients to look for: Propylene Glycol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Mineral Oil, Parabens, phthalates. Not only are these ingredients irriatating to most, some are toxic to the liver and kidneys. There is no way I can remeber to look for 884 ingredients on the backs of all the products that I buy.( I’m a confessed product junkie!! All estheticians are.) So look for the top 5 I think we should stay away from.

I’ve found a great alternative that’s not too expensive and feels great on my skin! I recently went on my honeymoon to Mexico and needed a smaller bottle of body lotion to take with me. I bought Jason’s Naturals 84% Aloe Vera lotion for the first time. I think it was 8 or 9 bucks. I loved it! It felt great after spending the day in the sun and soaked in and didn’t feel greasy or smell gross. So now I’ll be buying the big bottle for my bathroom!!

Be K.I.N.D. to yourself with these delicious bars!

Hey everyone, it’s Shanon G. For any of you out there who want a delicious snack that will fit in your purse I would highly recommend the KIND plus bars by KIND snacks. The other day my friend Marzia brought a bunch of these yummy treats to a photo shoot in case anyone got hungry. Well, of course you know I got hungry, so I tried one and YUM! they are so good! Since then I have tried every kind they make and my favorite is the cranberry almond + antioxidants. I really like these bars for the convenience and health benefits-you can carry them in your purse and not have to risk eating something you don’t really want to eat just because you didn’t bring a snack with when you left the house. The KIND bars are great for you too- they have antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E, they fight free radicals, and the list of ingredients is all stuff that you can actually pronounce 🙂 like almonds, dried cranberries, macadamias, and honey. They also have 3 grams of fiber, something a pregnant woman like me is looking to eat as much as possible. The KIND plus bars are gluten/wheat free, low glycemic index, non gmo, no trans fats, and dairy/cholesterol free. In short they are a convenient way to eat healthy on the go. Now for those of you who are going to carry these in your purse here’s a little tip- don’t put them at the bottom of your purse- it will push all the air out of the package and make the wrapper a pain in the you-know-what to open, use a side pocket instead! Also, I buy mine at Kroger, a local grocery store in Dallas, they’re regularly around $1.79 apiece, but check often because sometimes they go on sale and you can stock up for cheap!
